  1. Here’s everything we could find for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch that didn’t get screen time. Apple held a monstrous WWDC this year, and a ton of what was rumored, it turns out, will actually see the light of day. There’s the new 15-inch MacBook Air, M2-powered Mac Studio, and Apple’s finally realized AR headset — which we now know is called the Vision Pro. As usual, Apple didn’t touch on everything new during its opening keynote. But lots of small features that could change the way you use your Apple devices (or are just fun to play with) get packed in, and we’ve collected as many of those as we could find here. To keep this article from being a mile long, I’ve noted in the top iOS 17 section where I could confirm features will hit other platforms. So take a deep breath and dive in. iOS 17 has a lot of new features, including the cool new StandBy mode. Image: Apple iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 I’m a fan of a lot of the new stuff going on with iOS 17 and iPadOS 17. I love the idea of being able to pick up my phone and answer it while someone is recording a voicemail (what is this, 1996?) or leave a FaceTime video message. And Apple’s demonstration of collaboration on PDFs for iPad looks great. Most, if not all, of the new features below will hit both operating systems. iPhones X, 8, and 8 Plus will no longer be supported. Looks like anyone hoping to keep Apple’s 2017 lineup up to date for one more year is out of luck. Apple had a nice streak of support for older phones — iOS 13, iOS 14, and iOS 15 could all run on the same phones — but then, iOS 16 went and dropped everything up to the iPhone 7 and the first-gen iPhone SE. iPadOS 17 will lose support for the first-gen iPad Pro and fifth-gen iPad. AirTag and Find My sharing is coming! I’ve been silently begging for this in my quiet moments since AirTags came out, and it’s finally here. Or will be. This also includes any other Find My accessories, and you can share with up to five people. Apple Maps gets offline downloads. Eight years after Google Maps added it, Apple Maps will finally get offline downloads. Enhanced electric vehicle routing. You’ll be able to see charging stations on your route, with “real-time availability.” You can pick your preferred charging network, and it’ll show you what’s available along your route. Google Maps has had the feature since 2019, and it’s pretty darn handy. App shortcuts will show up in the Top Hit card in Spotlight search. So you can go straight to your preferred Apple Photo albums by searching for them from iOS Spotlight search, for example. Visual Look Up lets you find recipes based on your food pics. You’ve been able to learn about things you took pictures of since iOS 15 using the Visual Look Up feature. Now, you can find recipes for similar dishes to ones you have pictures of in your Photos library. You’ll also be able to get info about aspects of a video or a cutout you pulled from Apple Photos. Communication Safety is expanding. It’s coming to AirDrop, photo picker, FaceTime messages, the new Contact Posters feature, and even third-party apps. That’s a pretty broad expansion to Apple’s warning system for nudity. The company is also adding the option to have those images blurred so you have to take one more step to view them. More privacy upgrades. Apple says you can choose which photos to share from within an app while keeping the rest of your Photos library private (though it’s unclear how that’s different from the same feature introduced in iOS 14 — I’ve asked Apple and will update if it responds), and apps can add events to the Apple Calendar app without being able to actually view the calendar. There’s also an expanded Lockdown Mode, allowing you to turn on Apple’s über private mode across all your devices, including the Apple Watch. New Memoji stickers. Now you get Halo, Smirk, and Peekaboo. Automatically sorted grocery lists in Reminders. Reminders will group your items automatically; you can change how you want them grouped, and your preferences stick around. Activity history in Apple Home. The Home app will show who operated a door lock and when they did it as well as recent activity for garage doors, contact sensors, and your security system. A footnote says this will only be available if you’ve upgraded the Home app to the new Apple Home architecture. Crossword puzzles in the News app. Apple has sherlocked crosswords! Apple News Plus subscribers only. Apple News Plus audio stories will be available in Apple’s Podcasts app. Sign in with any email address or phone number listed in your Apple ID account. Freeform gets new tools. Some of this was mentioned in the keynote during the iPad section, but other tools coming to Apple’s collaborative whiteboard app include a ruler, watercolour brush, calligraphy pen, highlighter, and variable-width pen. The shape recognition feature Apple mentioned during this section isn’t mentioned on the iOS 17 preview page, so it’s possible that’s exclusive to iPads. Crossfade between songs in Apple Music. Old Apple iTunes for Mac fans might remember the ability to add a crossfade between songs, meaning the volume would fade out at the end of one song and the beginning of the next would fade in. I hated that feature, but hey, maybe some of y’all liked it. And now, that feature is in the first iOS 17 beta, according to 9to5Mac. Redesigned Now Playing. The Now Playing strip at the bottom of the Apple Music app in iOS 17 floats above the rest of the UI in Apple Music, and the tabs beneath it fade into the rest of the UI on either side of the floating controls, as noted by MacRumors. Collaborative playlists. Though you could always share playlists, iOS 17 will let you fully collaborate on them with others. Anyone sharing the list will be able to add, reorder, and remove songs, and they will be able to react to song choices with emoji. You can now invoke Siri during a call or FaceTime on your phone. This feature, spotted by a Reddit user in the first iOS 17 beta, allows you to use Siri even when you’re on a call, expanding the ability to use Siri to hang up on a call, which was introduced in iOS 16. You can add links from one note to another. Apple spent some time talking about PDFs in the Notes app but didn’t talk about this nice upgrade. The company only mentions the feature on the iPadOS 17 preview page, but as MacRumors writes, it’s also on iOS 17, so it’s likely to be cross-platform. iPhone finally gets multiple timers. Who knows why even the Apple Watch got this feature before the iPhone, but in iOS 17, you’ll be able to set multiple timers, glory be. As with linking PDFs, Apple mentioned the feature for iPads, but it’s coming to iOS as well. Safari gets a new “Listen to Page” feature. A new option is added to the page options of Safari that will have your iPhone read the webpage you’re looking at out loud. You can pause and unpause the feature. Interrupt Siri. iOS 17 will let you interrupt the voice assistant without saying “Siri” again. A new call controls section sits in the AirPods Pro settings. In the iOS 17 beta, this would let you configure how many times you squeeze the AirPods Pro stalks to end calls. Answering calls isn’t configurable, but given this is a beta, that could change. Pronouns in contacts. iOS 17 includes the ability to add a person’s pronouns to their contact card. You’ll be able to ping your Apple Watch from Control Center. iOS 17 will let you auto-delete verification codes in Messages and Mail. macOS Sonoma adds several new features. Image: Apple macOS Sonoma Apple’s newest version of its computer operating system will bring over more iOS design elements and features, with updated widgets that you can actually place on your desktop and a lock screen that follows the same design as that of your iPhone or iPad. Here’s what the company didn’t mention. macOS Sonoma drops support for these Macs: 2017 MacBooks Pros; the beloved 2017 12-inch MacBook; and 2017 iMacs. Control the composition of Center Stage. In Sonoma, you’ll be able to decide where you want to sit in the frame on video calls with new zoom and pan controls — that’ll be great if you want to show something on the call and don’t want your Mac deciding you need to be the focal point. You can recenter yourself at any time, and it appears this feature works with third-party apps as well. Share your full-screen window in video call apps. The green button in the top left of your windows now has a new function in its drop-down menu. Maybe you didn’t know this, but when you hover your mouse over that button, it gives you some quick tiling options, along with the ability to quickly move an app window to another display in your setup. In Sonoma, you’ll be able to share that window on a video call now. Continue your notes in Pages. For all those Apple Pages heads out there (there are dozens of us!), Sonoma will let you use the share button in Notes to send your work over to the Pages app to continue working there. Screen sharing gets a boost. Sonoma adds a new screen-sharing feature that lets you activate a high-performance mode when you’re remotely accessing your Mac over a high-bandwidth connection. Apple’s Sonoma preview page says it will use the advanced media engine to bolster that connection to make the connection more responsive. macOS Sonoma lets Macs pair with Made for iPhone hearing devices. In addition to that, the new Personal Voice feature is coming to Macs as well as updates to text size adjustment, the ability to automatically pause autoplaying animated images on the web, and an updated experience for learning Mac Voice Control. Apple Mail updates. Mail will start surfacing travel-related emails at the top of your search results as the trip date approaches, and you’ll be able to add big emoji to your messages, making email more annoying than ever. watchOS 10 gets widgets, new watchfaces, and more. Image: Apple watchOS 10 watchOS 10 is getting a widgety makeover later this year and bringing some cool new enhancements to cycling and hiking workouts, but that’s not all. Here’s what we found that Apple didn’t shine the spotlight on during its WWDC 2023 keynote. watchOS 10 will only work for the Apple Watch Series 4 and up. Any watch compatible with watchOS 9 will be eligible for the update. Control Center is now accessible by pressing the side button. Previously, this brought up all of your open apps. Mobile Device Management now comes to Apple Watch. Apple is opening up managed Apple Watches to enterprise customers, adding the ability to configure VPNs, deploy internal apps, and more. You can now add an Apple Watch to a group FaceTime. Of course, you would only join with audio since there’s no camera on the Apple Watch. Apple Maps downloads will work on the Apple Watch. But you have to be in range of your iPhone. Medication reminders get follow-up notifications, and you can classify them as “critical” alerts. FaceTime recorded video messages will be viewable on the Apple Watch. Apple hardware Apple hit some of its Mac lines with updates during its WWDC keynote, but it shuffled through each one incredibly quickly, so there are a few small details it left out. Here’s what I was able to find. Mac Studio features: The Mac Studio gets Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, both upgrades from the M1 version. Mac Pro features: Like the Mac Studio, the Mac Pro will support both Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 out of the box. All the features Apple didn’t mention in its WWDC 2023 keynote
  2. Apple announced the macOS 14 software update during its WWDC 2023 keynote alongside some new Macs, iOS 17, iPadOS 17, watchOS 10, and the Vision Pro headset. The latest update for Macs is codenamed Sonoma and it bridges the gap between iPhone and Mac even further with its new features. macOS Sonoma comes with redesigned desktop widgets that can adapt their colour according to the wallpaper set on the desktop. The latest update also comes with a revamped widget picker UI which can access widgets stored on the iPhone as well. The new widgets on macOS 14 are now interactive, for instance, the user can check off reminders, play/pause media, access smart home controls, etc. directly from the desktop. Furthermore, the widgets can fade away into the background when the user is working on an app on the desktop. Along with that, Apple has also added new slow-motion screensavers to macOS 14 that users can also set as their wallpapers. A useful addition for gamers is the new "Game Mode" for macOS 14 that's designed to reduce audio latency for AirPods and make sure "games get the highest priority on the CPU and GPU." Apple says the mode can work with all Mac games and can double the Bluetooth sampling rate for Xbox and PlayStation controllers to reduce input latency. Also, the Japanese video game designer Hideo Kojima showed up during the keynote live stream to reveal that Death Stranding: Director’s Cut will arrive on macOS. Speaking of video conferencing features, macOS 14 comes with a new Presenter Overlay effect that puts the user on top of the content they are sharing during a video call. Users can also share how they feel in the form of reactions such as balloons, confetti, hearts, etc. the video. The Safari browsing experience has been improved with the addition of browser profiles. These allow each user to have their own personal space with separate cookies, history, extensions, Tab Groups, and other stuff. macOS 14 Sonoma will be released to the public later this year with all the new features and changes. Its developer beta is available to try, starting today, and the public beta will arrive next month. macOS 14 Sonoma officially announced at WWDC 2023
  3. During WWDC 2023, Apple finally and officially announced its augmented reality headset, The company is calling it the Apple Vision Pro and it will allow owners to interact with apps on its screens, while also viewing the real world at the same time. During the WWDC keynote video, Apple stated the Vision Pro can switch between being a full virtual reality headset and an AR headset thanks to a physical dial. The headset, unlike many other AR and VR devices, does not include hand controllers. Instead, the Vision Pro uses both gestures and voice commands to go through the apps on the displays. The two Micro OLED displays have a total of 23 million pixels, which should make watching content on the Vision Pro extremely sharp and realistic. That's more pixels for each eye than you will find on a big-screen TV. Apple added: This technological breakthrough, combined with custom catadioptric lenses that enable incredible sharpness and clarity, delivers jaw-dropping experiences. Users with vision correction needs will use ZEISS Optical Inserts to ensure visual fidelity and eye tracking accuracy. Inside the device, there will be two Apple-designed chips, The company stated: M2 delivers unparalleled standalone performance, while the brand-new R1 chip processes input from 12 cameras, five sensors, and six microphones to ensure that content feels like it is appearing right in front of the user’s eyes, in real time. R1 streams new images to the displays within 12 milliseconds — 8x faster than the blink of an eye. The device will come with a battery pack which Apple says will last up to two hours on a single charge. You can also connect it to a power supply. The device will use the visionOS operating system. Apple stated: visionOS features a brand-new three-dimensional interface that makes digital content look and feel present in a user’s physical world. By responding dynamically to natural light and casting shadows, it helps the user understand scale and distance. To enable user navigation and interaction with spatial content, Apple Vision Pro introduces an entirely new input system controlled by a person’s eyes, hands, and voice. Users can browse through apps by simply looking at them, tapping their fingers to select, flicking their wrist to scroll, or using voice to dictate. Some of the apps that are being developed for visionOS include one that shows a beating human heart in 3D for medical and educational use, and Microsoft will offer its Word, Excel, and Teams apps that will work while viewed in the headset. Apple will also be a gaming device, with the company stating there will be over 100 Apple Arcade games available to play on the Vision Pro on the first day it launches. Disney CEO Bob Iger also showed off some future plans the entertainment company has for the device. That includes watching Disney Plus with some extra features, watching games on ESPN in full 3D virtual environments, and more. Apple claims it has filed over 5,000 patents based on its development of the Vision Pro. It will launch in early 2024, for a starting price of $3,499. Apple Vision Pro AR headset revealed at WWDC 2023, priced at $3,499 for early 2024 launch
  4. During WWDC 2023, Apple announced a number of new Mac PC products, along with a new Apple Silicon processor. That includes a new version for the MacBook Air notebooks, new versions of the Mac Studio and Mac Pro, and an all-new Apple Silicon processor that the company claims is the most powerful PC CPU ever made. The new 15-inch MacBook Air is Apple's latest thin-and-light notebook. In fact, Apple claims it's the thinnest 15-inch notebook ever made at 11.5mm. The 3.3-pound laptop includes a 15.3-inch Liquid Retina display, with the Apple M2 processor inside. Apple claims the battery life for the notebook will handle up to 18 hours on a single charge. It comes in midnight, starlight, silver, and space gray colours and comes with a starting price of $1,299. It's available to pre-order now, and shipments will begin next week. The previous 13-inch MacBook Air also gets a price drop to $1,099. Apple is also updating its Mac Studio desktop and it's also relaunching its Mac Pro workstation. The new Mac Studio will add the M2 Max chip, and you can get the Max Studio and the new Mac Pro version with the all-new M2 Ultra chip. Basically, the M2 Ultra merges the die of two M2 Max chips using what Apple calls "groundbreaking UltraFusion technology". Apple claims the M2 Ultra is the most powerful PC CPU ever made. Apple states: M2 Ultra consists of 134 billion transistors — 20 billion more than M1 Ultra. Its unified memory architecture supports up to a breakthrough 192GB of memory capacity, which is 50 percent more than M1 Ultra, and features 800GB/s of memory bandwidth — twice that of M2 Max. M2 Ultra features a more powerful CPU that’s 20 percent faster than M1 Ultra, a larger GPU that’s up to 30 percent faster, and a Neural Engine that’s up to 40 percent faster.1 It also features a media engine with twice the capabilities of M2 Max for blazing ProRes acceleration. With all these advancements, M2 Ultra takes Mac performance to a whole new level yet again. The chip will be included in models of the Mac Studio and is also being put into the new version of the Mac Pro. Apple is also adding the M2 Max to the Mac Studio as well. Mac Studio will start pricing at $1,999, while the Mac Pro will start pricing at $6,999 for its tower version and $7,999 for the rack-mounted version. Again, both are available to preorder now for shipment next week. 15-inch Apple MacBook Air, Max Studio and Mac Pro with M2 Ultra chip revealed at WWDC 2023
  5. Apple just unveiled iPadOS 17 during its WWDC 2023. While this event might not see any major hardware upgrades for the iPad lineup, the latest software update promises to bring a host of exciting new features and refinements. iPadOS 17 focuses on customization, introducing interactive widgets, Lock Screen widgets, and a revamped wallpaper interface. Additionally, the Health app makes its debut on the iPad, emphasizing Apple's commitment to health and well-being. One of the most significant improvements in iPadOS 17 is the introduction of interactive widgets. Users will no longer need to open individual apps to perform certain actions. These widgets provide quick access to app functions and information like iPhone's iOS 17. iPadOS 17 introduces a revamped wallpaper interface. This new interface makes it easier than ever to change wallpapers on the fly, giving users more options to personalize their iPad's appearance. With a wide range of wallpapers to choose from, users can refresh the look of their device to suit their preferences. Another notable addition in iPadOS 17 is the introduction of Live Activities and support for multiple timers. Live Activities bring a dynamic element to the iPad, providing real-time information and updates on various tasks and activities. This feature enables users to stay organized and informed, ensuring a seamless workflow. Additionally, the ability to set multiple timers simultaneously enhances productivity, allowing users to manage their time efficiently. With the arrival of the Health app on the iPad, Apple extends its focus on health and well-being to its tablet lineup. The Health app synchronizes health data between the iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch, providing users with a holistic view of their well-being. Also, the inclusion of full support for HealthKit enables users to integrate third-party health and fitness apps, further enhancing the iPad's capabilities as a health-tracking device. And finally, iPadOS 17 brings exciting enhancements to the Apple Notes app, including PDF support and Apple Pencil annotations. Users can now annotate PDFs directly within the Notes app using the Apple Pencil, making it a powerful tool for productivity and collaboration. iPadOS 17 announced at WWDC, coming with interactive widgets and more
  6. Apple held its WWDC 2023 conference keynote today and it unveiled new Macs, a new chip for Macs and iOS 17 for iPhones. Among the new iOS features are Contact Posters and NameDrop which let you customize the incoming call experience and share contact details just by holding iPhones near each other. With Contact Posters, you get a full-screen graphic of the person calling you. This will help users work out who's calling them so they can decide if they want to answer. Contact Posters were shown using pictures of people and their Memoji. “With iOS 17, we’ve made iPhone more personal and intuitive by deeply considering the features we all rely on every day,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “Phone, FaceTime, and Messages are central to how we communicate, and this release is packed with updates we think our users are going to love. We’ve also reimagined AirDrop with new ways to share, autocorrect gets even better, and we’re introducing all-new experiences with Journal and StandBy, plus so much more. We can’t wait for everyone to try it.” During the keynote, Apple also showed off NameDrop, you just hold your iPhones near each other and you'll be able to share contact details such as your phone number, email address, and Contact Poster. This seems like a much more elegant way of exchanging details than rifling through your phone looking for your phone number. You can also send photos and files to other users like this and if the file is larger, iOS now lets you move away from the other phone and the transfer will continue. For those of you out there who like writing stuff down, Apple has introduced a new app with iOS 17 called Journal. With Journal, you can save various types of rich content including contacts, locations, music, photos, podcasts, and workouts. As an example, if you went for a walk at the beach with your earbuds in, you could store a journal entry with the pictures you took and the songs you listened to so that you can relive the experience. Apple said that these Journal entries are end-to-end encrypted too, you they will remain private. Other features include Live Stickers, Live Voicemail, better autocorrect and StandBy which displays information while the phone is docked and charging. Apple unveils iOS 17 at WWDC 2023, here are the new features
  7. Apple has shown off watchOS 10 at its annual developer conference, WWDC 2023. With this update, the company has focused on widgets, you can now turn the digital crown to bring up your widget stack to scroll through, this feature is called Smart Stack. There are also new watch faces to choose from including one featuring Snoopy and Woodstock. With this watch face, the two characters interact and play on the watch hands and react to local weather conditions. While Apple Watch is known for its usefulness in physical workouts, the company wanted to help with maintaining your mental health too. According to research, Apple found that reflecting on your state of mind can build emotional awareness and resilience. With the Mindfulness app in watchOS 10, users can log their momentary emotions and daily moods. watchOS 10 also focuses on vision health. Apple said that children need up to two hours outdoors. With this update, Apple Watch can track how long you've been in sunlight and for children this information can be relayed back to their parent's iPhone or iPad via the Health app. “watchOS is the world’s most advanced wearable operating system, and it has redefined how people all over the world think of what a watch can do,” said Kevin Lynch, Apple’s vice president of Technology. “watchOS 10 is a major milestone and an energizing new approach for Apple Watch, introducing a fresh new design for quickly viewing information, delightful new watch faces, new features for cyclists and hikers, and important tools for health.” Apple said that watchOS 10 is available as a developer beta today and that it'll arrive as a free software update in the fall. Apple shows off watchOS 10 at annual developer conference WWDC 2023
  8. Apple has finally confirmed it will hold the 2023 edition of its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) from June 5-9 at its headquarters in Cupertino, California. Registration for the event is now live on Apple's site. Most of the event will be online and be free to live stream. However, Apple added that it will hold a special event on June 5 in the company's Apple Park for both developers and students. They will be able to watch the keynote address, along with other activities. Most people expect Apple to finally reveal its long-rumored, and long in development, mixed reality headset at WWDC 2023. Apple will use the conference to show the headset off to developers who might want to make apps for the product. It is rumored to combine AR and VR with no need to connect to a PC or even physical hand controllers. Current rumors claim Apple will sell the headset in late 2023 for a whopping $3,000. Apple is also expected to reveal the major features coming to its mobile operating system iOS 17, along with the next version of its MacOS and more. Apple's event will be the last of the "big three" developer conferences to be held this spring. The 2023 Google I/O conference will be held May 10. Microsoft's Build conference is scheduled for May 23-25. Apple WWDC 2023 to be held June 5-9 with its mixed reality headset expected to debut
  9. Apple reportedly aims to reveal three new desktop Macs at WWDC 2023, discovered in a code by a Twitter user. The user tweeted that they have spotted the possible Macs that are expected to be announced at WWDC 2023. Nicolas Alvarez shared his findings on Twitter, and there are three different Mac models, Mac 14,8, Mac 14,13, and Mac 14,14. The user mentioned that the codes were found in the Find My configuration. Alvarez added that the Macs were found in a list of devices where "you left your device behind" is disabled, so there is a huge possibility that these are desktop Macs. Alvarez said that they could be Mac Studios, but we still don't have any official information about their models. On a side note, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg recently reported that Apple won't be launching Mac Studios with M2 chips but will focus on an M3-powered computer. He also added that the new Mac Pro also may not appear at WWDC 2023, which makes Alvarez's discovery a mystery. Apple WWDC 2023 will feature several big announcements The company is expected to reveal a couple of new computers at WWDC 2023, one of them being the 15-inch MacBook Air. It was leaked before, and rumors say that it is going to be one of the best MacBooks ever produced. On top of its MacBooks, Alvarez might have found the other pieces of the lineup, and Apple might surprise everyone with an unexpected announcement. Apple fans are looking forward to WWDC 2023, which will be held in June. It looks like there will be a couple of interesting announcements. Apple is looking to add another category to widen its product span with the new VR headset. It is expected to take the place of the iPhones in the future. Besides, Apple Watch will also get its first ever big update since its launch. Gurman recently reported that the watchOS interface will change, and a couple more updates will be made. With the addition of these three Macs, Apple surely wants to have an unforgettable event! Apple might reveal three new Macs at WWDC 2023
  10. We haven't heard much about the Mac Studio since its debut last year. We're generally fans of Apple's now-year-old Mac Studio desktop—and skeptical about its now-year-late Apple Silicon Mac Pro refresh. The Studio addresses many of the needs of the Mac Pro's intended audience in a smaller device that costs less money, while the Apple Silicon Mac Pro seems likely to dispense with at least some of the upgradeability and versatility of past generations. Reports have suggested that Apple could skip an M2-powered Mac Studio refresh to make that planned Mac Pro more appealing to potential buyers when it arrives. But that doesn't mean the Mac Studio is going away; Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says that a pair of Mac Studio updates are being "planned," though he doesn't know when they'll be out. (We would assume that the difference between the two models comes down to which processor they use; the M1 Mac and M1 Ultra versions of the Studio have several differences aside from raw CPU and GPU speed.) That nugget is one of several in a summary of Apple's plans for its Worldwide Developers Conference in June. Gurman adds small details to several stories he has reported in the recent past; the most interesting for Mac users is the 15-inch MacBook Air, which he said late last week would likely include an M2 processor and the same 3024×1964 screen resolution as the 14-inch MacBook Pro. Gurman now says Apple plans to announce the new Air at WWDC. Macs with newer M3 processors, including updated versions of the 13-inch MacBook Air and Pro, could come "this year or in 2024." Gurman believes any laptops announced during WWDC will continue to use M2 processors, and the other MacBook models mentioned already include the M2. Apple's biggest announcement at WWDC is still expected to be a new VR and AR headset, along with an operating system referred to internally as "xrOS." The headset project has reportedly been divisive inside Apple, going back to its inception in 2015. A New York Times report from March highlighted continuing internal "skepticism" about the product, from its features to its design to its release timing to its price (supposedly "roughly $3,000"). There will still be plenty of software announcements at WWDC, but Gurman expects most of them to be low-key. He says this year's iOS, iPadOS, and macOS updates will be relatively minor, though iOS and iPadOS could be modified to allow app sideloading to comply with new European Union regulations. The exception is watchOS, which Gurman says is getting its "biggest update... since the first version was introduced in 2015." The evolution of watchOS and the Apple Watch has been gradual; originally pitched as a sort of do-everything extension of your phone, its focus slowly shifted away from general-purpose apps to health and fitness. While Gurman isn't specific about what this update entails, it will reportedly feature "an updated interface." Report: 15-inch MacBook Air coming at WWDC, new Mac Studios will arrive eventually
  11. It's been highly anticipated for a while, but it looks like Apple might finally start supporting a feature that's already allowed on Android smartphones. A new report claims that Apple will use its annual WWDC developers conference in June to reveal sideloading support of apps for the upcoming iOS 17 update. The report from Bloomberg, citing unnamed sources, says that the new feature will be Apple's attempt to comply with the approval of the European Union's Digital Markets Act that was passed in 2022. That law requires devices like the iPhone to allow for third-party installation of apps. The law adds that those devices must comply by March 2024. This will obviously be a huge sea change for iPhone owners, who have only been able to download apps via Apple's app store. Bloomberg also claims that Apple will still officially announce its long-in-development mixed reality headset at WWDC 2023, Recent unconfirmed reports claim the headset has had production delays, but Bloomberg claims it will still get a big reveal at the conference, although it might not go on sale until the end of 2023. The report says that we could also see some new MacBook notebook models debut at WWDC and that the next watchOS update could see some major interface changes for owners of the Apple Watch when it is shown off at the conference. Apple may announce support for sideloading apps on iPhones via iOS 17 as part of WWDC 2023
  12. Apple is poised to unveil a major innovation for its voice-controlled assistant, Siri, at WWDC in 2023. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple aims to eliminate the need for the phrase "Hey Siri" and make a simple "Siri" command sufficient to activate the virtual assistant. The current "Hey Siri" command has become natural to Apple device users, but Apple engineers are determined to make the interaction even more seamless. By reducing the trigger phrase to just "Siri," Apple aims to eliminate the need for a two-word command, enhancing user experience and convenience. However, achieving this seemingly simple modification presents several challenges. Teaching Siri to recognize various languages, accents, and dialects is complex. Apple must ensure that Siri understands user commands accurately, regardless of linguistic variations. Alongside the trigger phrase change, Apple aims to expand Siri's compatibility with third-party apps and services. By opening up Siri further, Apple hopes to enhance its voice assistant's overall functionality. Apple is also investing in the development of Siri's language capabilities. An upcoming framework called Siri Natural Language Generation promises to make Siri's responses more natural and expand its vocabulary. Although still in the early stages of development, this framework holds the potential to significantly improve the quality and diversity of Siri's interactions with users. Early indications suggest that the framework is currently employed for light-hearted exchanges, such as telling jokes, but it is expected to evolve into a more comprehensive linguistic tool. WWDC, scheduled to commence on June 5, 2023, promises a host of exciting announcements from Apple. In addition to the anticipated changes to Siri, the event will showcase iOS 17, iPadOS 17, watchOS 10, and macOS 14. Furthermore, Apple is set to unveil xrOS, the operating system for its forthcoming Reality Pro headset, which is expected to highlight the event. 13. Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is going to kick off in the coming week. The conference which is free for all developers will be held in an online format continuing the pandemic trend. However, developers will be able to join an in-person special event at the Apple Park campus on the opening day. WWDC 2023 is scheduled to happen from June 5 through June 9. Its official keynote address will start at 10 AM PDT (UTC−07:00) where Apple will talk about the new features and changes coming to iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS 14, watchOS 10, and more. You can stream the free-to-watch keynote from a variety of sources, including the Apple website, the Apple Developer app, the Apple TV app, and its official YouTube channel. On the Apple website, you can click the Add to your Calendar link to download the file and create a reminder on your iCalendar app. Similarly, Apple has created a live stream on its YouTube channel, where you can click on the Notify Me button to get a reminder ahead of the keynote. The keynote will be followed by the Platforms State of Union presentation, starting at 1:30 PM PDT on June 5. However, the State of Union event will be available to stream via the Apple Developer app and website only. On June 5, Apple will also announce the winners of this year's Apple Design Awards. The company has already revealed the names of the finalists for individual categories. Apple said that WWDC 2023 will compromise 175 in-depth video sessions which will be released via the developer app and website from June 6-9. Furthermore, there will be one-on-one sessions and Slack activities throughout the week where developers and students can interact with Apple engineers and get their questions answered. Users can also watch session videos together with their friends via SharePlay. This year's developers' conference is expected to add a new 15-inch MacBook Air to Apple's lineup. Also, there have been reports that Apple might bring app sideloading to iPhones along with new lock screen customizations, revamped system apps, and navigation Live Activities for the lock screen. Here's when and where you can watch Apple's WWDC 2023 keynote
  14. A new Mac Studio is more likely than the long-awaited Apple Silicon Mac Pro. As Apple rumors go, the long-rumored 15-inch MacBook Air sounds almost certain to be announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference next week. But as Apple’s plans take shape, it also seems possible that we’ll see new Mac desktops featuring high-end M2 Max and M2 Ultra chips. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman believes that these new chips are most likely to power an updated range of Mac Studio desktops, a little over a year after the first Studios were initially introduced. As recently as a few months ago, Gurman speculated that the M2 generation would skip over the Mac Studio entirely and that Apple would instead opt to use the newer chips as a selling point for a new Apple Silicon Mac Pro. But that version of reality may not come to pass. Gurman says these new Mac models have Mac14,3 and Mac14,4 model identifiers, while the Mac Pro that Apple is testing internally is identified as Mac14,8. (We initially thought these no-adjective model identifiers were a throwback to the PowerPC days, but the reality is more boring; Apple just isn’t using unique Mac names in model identifiers anymore, possibly to combat leaks and the speculation that arises when new IDs break cover.) We’ve already seen the M2 Max in the 16-inch MacBook Pro, but the M2 Ultra would be brand new. It’s a predictable upgrade to the current M1 Ultra: Gurman says the M2 Ultra will have 16 performance cores and eight efficiency cores (instead of four in the M1 Ultra), up to 76 GPU cores (up from a max of 48), and up to 192GB of RAM (up from 128GB). All M2 chips have used more efficiency cores, more GPU cores, and a higher maximum RAM ceiling compared to their M1 predecessors. Gurman also noted earlier this week that Apple was planning to accept trade-ins of current M1-based Mac Studio models starting next week. This isn't always a sign that Apple is planning a direct replacement for an older model, but taken together with the other rumors, it makes a new pair of Studio desktops look even more likely. Whether we’ll find out more about the long-delayed Apple Silicon Mac Pro at WWDC is anyone’s guess. The Mac Pro is the only Intel Mac that Apple still sells, pushing the company’s original two-year processor transition timeline out into its third year (and counting). Apple Silicon chips so far have been designed with tightly integrated memory and GPUs that could limit a new Mac Pro's expandability, making it harder to justify the high-end desktop's continued existence. Apple reportedly prepping a pair of high-end Mac desktops ahead of WWDC
  15. Apple took to Twitter this week and dropped a new teaser for the upcoming WWDC 2023 developer event starting next week. The iPhone maker shared a new teaser clip on its official handle and wrote that "A new era begins." Along with the teaser, Apple has shared a new WWDC23 Power Up playlist that's available to the subscribers of Apple Music. The official playlist contains 25 songs from the likes of Dua Lipa, Post Malone, Miley Cyrus, Coi Leray, The Jonas Brothers, Ed Sheeran, and more. The total length of the curated playlist is 1 hour and 15 minutes. WWDC 2023 is scheduled to start on June 5 (Monday) at 10 am Pacific Time. While Apple is expected to talk about the incremental updates to its respective software, there have been rumors that it might unveil the long-awaited mixed reality headset as well. With that said, the cryptic message "A new era begins" seems to add some spice to the mix. For starters, Apple's headset is expected to support millions of existing apps and might get dedicated versions of Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro. According to a report by analyst Ross Young, the headset might come with an insane level of brightness. However, a recent report suggests Apple has made small internal estimates regarding the sales figures of the unreleased headset. Other than the headset, Apple is expected to announce a 15-inch MacBook Air during the conference. The company could also unveil multiple desktop Macs featuring the M2 Max and yet-to-be-announced M2 Ultra chips. During the conference, Apple will also announce the winners for the 2023 edition of the Apple Design Awards. via 9to5Mac Apple shares new WWDC23 Power Up music playlist ahead of its developers conference
  16. WWDC kicks off on June 5th, and it’s going to be a big one. Apple’s upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is expected to be one of its biggest yet. After years of rumors and leaks, Apple could finally take the wraps off of its mixed reality headset, entering the company into a new product category and giving the world a first look at its attempt to prove that virtual reality is worth investing in. There’s also certain to be a lot more: operating system updates, new apps and features, and possibly some new hardware, too. Here, we’ve pulled together details on how and when you can watch the main WWDC keynote as well as some of the announcements that we expect from Apple. When is the WWDC 2023 keynote? This year’s main WWDC keynote is slated for Monday, June 5th, at 1PM ET / 10AM PT. It will take place as a digital and in-person event at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, with Apple CEO Tim Cook expected to kick things off. Where can I watch WWDC? Apple will stream the WWDC keynote live from its website and YouTube channel. You can also watch the stream that we’ll embed at the top of this article once it goes live. If you can’t watch the keynote live, you can always watch it from the prerecorded version Apple will post on YouTube after it airs. With that said, let’s get into some of the biggest announcements that we expect Apple to make during WWDC. The debut of Apple’s long-rumored mixed reality headset Apple’s mixed reality headset is arguably one of the company’s most exciting products in years. While Apple still hasn’t even confirmed its existence, reports suggest that it will be capable of providing both virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences. Seemingly called the “Reality Pro,” the developer-focused headset is expected to take on a “ski goggle” look that comes with a physical dial that lets you tune in and out of virtual reality. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, it’s also supposed to feature a multitude of external sensors to support hand tracking along with sensors on the inside of the headset that track your eyes. The headset will likely exist as a standalone device, sporting a battery pack that connects to the headset using a proprietary cable. So far, reports suggest that Apple has been busy building VR versions of some of its native apps, including Safari, FaceTime, Apple TV, Apple Books, Freeform, and more. With an expected price tag of around $3,000, Apple’s headset won’t come cheap. Although Apple’s supposedly working on more affordable versions of the device as well, we likely won’t see them at this year’s event. A brand-new 15-inch MacBook Air The 2022 M2 MacBook Air. Photo by Becca Farsace / The Verge Apple is also expected to launch a larger 15-inch option for the MacBook Air — a device that has long featured a standard 13-inch display. We first heard about the device last year, and more detailed rumors have piled up since then. The 15-inch MacBook Air will likely come with the in-house M2 chip used in the MacBook Air models released last year. As noted by a report from Bloomberg, it may also feature the same 3024 x 1964 resolution as the 14-inch MacBook Pro, although the screen may be a bit less sharp since it has an extra inch of space to fill in. Aside from that, though, it’s not exactly clear whether Apple has plans to reveal any other new Macs. The company’s rumored to be working on a refreshed 13-inch MacBook Pro, 13-inch MacBook Air, and a 24-inch iMac, all of which could come with a new M3 chip. New features for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge WWDC is an event for developers, which means we’re bound to see some updates to iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and more. That includes the reveal of iOS 17, which is rumored to come with a variety of smaller quality-of-life updates. Apple already previewed the suite of accessibility features that will likely arrive with the new OS, including a Personal Voice tool that lets users create a synthetic voice with 15 minutes of training. Apple is also expected to include some updates for Stage Manager in iPadOS 17, the multitasking interface that my colleague David Pierce said “still doesn’t work,” even after Apple officially released it last October. The updates sound like they’re more on the technical side of things, though, and less about its general functionality. Not much is known about what’s in store for macOS 14 and tvOS 17, but Apple is reported to be giving watchOS 10 a fairly big update that adds a new widget-heavy interface. A mental health-focused journaling iPhone app Speaking of iOS 17, a report from The Wall Street Journal indicates that Apple will launch a new journaling app for the iPhone that will let you write down your thoughts and activities throughout your day. It may also provide suggestions of topics for you to write about and offer “All Day People Discovery” to keep track of who you spend time with as well as even detect when you do something you usually don’t do on a certain day. While Apple is expected to reveal the app at WWDC, the company will likely launch it in the fall. The opening of Apple’s closed ecosystem Apple is running out of time to comply with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). While some of the rules have already gone into effect, “digital gatekeepers” like Apple have until March of next year at the latest to let users download third-party app stores and sideload apps within the EU, something Apple has strongly expressed opposition to over security concerns. That’s why it wouldn’t come as much of a surprise if Apple uses WWDC to preview some of the changes it’s making to its iPhone and iPad ecosystems. (Or at least quietly inform developers that the change is coming.) According to Bloomberg, Apple is looking to “overhaul” iOS in order to comply with European regulators. In addition to allowing sideloading, speculation is rampant that Apple may no longer require third-party browsers to use Apple’s own WebKit engine, which would allow more differentiation in mobile browsers. The company could also open up access to its NFC chip, which is currently limited to Apple services like Apple Wallet and Apple Pay. What’s next for Apple? Apple has a ton of new Macs on deck, and while we aren’t expecting all of them to make an appearance at WWDC, it’s always a possibility. Aside from the upcoming MacBooks we mentioned earlier, we know that Apple’s working on a Mac Pro with Apple’s in-house chip, an updated 24-inch iMac, and two new models of the Mac Studio. We’re also keeping an eye out for Apple’s next move in the AI space. While the company has remained relatively quiet about its AI ambitions, the company’s job listings indicate that it’s looking to hire people who specialize in the field. It also recently restricted employees from using ChatGPT over concerns about data leaks, which raises the question of whether it will build its own AI system for workers like Samsung is. Of course, we can also look forward to the release of the iPhone 15 later this year. Rumors suggest that all models of the iPhone 15 will come with the Dynamic Island this time around (not just the Pro), and it could also feature a USB-C charging port (thanks to yet another EU regulation). That, however, will have to wait for September. WWDC 2023: what to expect at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference
