Microsoft Surface Duo 2 breathes its last, receives its last software update
Karlston posted a news in Mobile News
Microsoft Surface Duo 2 has received its final software update, marking the end of Microsoft's brief return to the smartphone market. The Surface Duo 2 was launched in October 2021, following a disastrous debut of the Surface Duo, which was announced in September 2019, and launched a year later in October 2020. The final update for Microsoft Surface Duo 2 update weighs approximately 55MB in size, with the changelog stating, "This update improves the performance and stability of your Surface Duo 2." While other foldables from companies like Samsung, OPPO, OnePlus, etc., have fared extremely well in the market, Microsoft's take on a book-style smartphone wasn't well-received by tech enthusiasts. The Surface Duo 2 didn't feature an external display and has dual-screen inner displays, with a huge gap in between, ruining the entire experience. image via Reddit Microsoft already ended the software update support for the original Surface Duo smartphone last year, and now it was time for the Surface Duo 2. According to Windows Central, the worst part about the Surface Duo 2 was that it only received a single Android OS update, i.e., from Android 11 to Android 12 (specifically Android 12L, which brought big optimizations). The Android 12L update was rolled out in October 2022, and since then the Surface Duo 2 hasn't received a single major update in the later two years of its existence. On the official Microsoft website, the company lists the life cycle for the Surface Duo 2 as ending on October 21. Unless a miracle is waiting or Microsoft has some wild plans, this latest update is the last update for the Surface Duo 2. This was the second chance Microsoft had in the smartphone market after its Lumia smartphone series. There is no clarity on what the future holds for Microsoft in the smartphone business. Plenty of Surface devices have already received the October 2023 firmware update, and now it is time for the Surface Duo 2, the only non-Windows Surface device, to get its share of patches and improvements. Version 2023.501.37 is now rolling out with a traditionally lackluster changelog containing only general Android security patches for October 2023. On the upside, the update requires less than 6MB, so there is no need to delete apps or files to get the latest release. What is new in the October 2023 firmware update for the Surface Duo 2? Here is the detailed information about the release: Update Version 2023.501.37 Update Size 5.78MB What is new This update: Addresses scenarios outlined in the Android Security Bulletin – October 2023. Extra Information The update does not require extra steps to perform before or after installation. Known Bugs Microsoft says the update does not contain any known bugs. How to install the update Connect to a Wi-Fi network you trust. Open the Settings app. Navigate to System > System update > Check for update. Wait for your Surface Duo 2 to download and prepare the latest update, then click Restart now. Although you are unlikely to experience issues with the latest firmware update, you should keep in mind that it is non-uninstallable. Therefore, backup important data before installing the October 2023 update. If you are up for more exciting Surface Duo news, check out the latest DuoWOA update, which adds preliminary support for the Surface Dial display accessory and other improvements to make running Windows on the first-gen Surface Duo slightly better. As a reminder, Microsoft stopped supporting the original Surface Duo in September 2023. Its successor, the Surface Duo 2, will get one more year of support, but chances of getting something more substantial than monthly security patches are extremely slim. Source

You may soon be able to use Surface Dial on Surface Duo's displays
Karlston posted a news in Mobile News
The DuoWOA team has released a new set of Windows drivers for the first and second-generation Surface Duo. The most notable change is preliminary support for the Surface Dial, Microsoft's long-forgotten display accessory. The changelogs also include fixes for a few issues and general stability improvements. Here is what is new in Surface Duo Windows drivers version 2310.45: And here is the changelog for the Surface Duo 2 (still a Proof of Concept, so nothing extraordinary): You can download the new drivers from GitHub. For those unfamiliar, Microsoft unveiled the Surface Dial in October 2016 alongside three compatible devices: the original Surface Studio, the Surface Book, and the fourth-generation Surface Pro (it received on-display support only in 2018). The idea was to give artists and other customers a new method to control tools and functions in compatible apps by rotating or pressing the dial placed directly on the display. Microsoft seemingly gave up on the accessory since displays in the latest Surface devices no longer support the dial, and it never received a successor with new features or improvements. However, seven years after the announcement, the Surface Dial is still available on Amazon for $75.99, 25% off its original MSRP. Soon, thanks to the power of enthusiasm, you may be able to use this quirky display accessory with the Surface Duo, a device never made to work with such peripherals or run a desktop operating system. The original Surface Duo is now officially dead—it reached the end of its troublesome life last month. The Surface Duo 2 is still supported, and Microsoft is committed to releasing software and firmware updates for one more year. However, do not expect much from those updates. Most likely, the Surface Duo 2 will remain on the current Android 12L with no hopes of ever getting Android 13, not to mention the recently released Android 14. Fortunately, the hope is not lost. Those owning the first or second-gen Surface Duo can now download the first unofficial Android 14 ROM for their dual-screen device. Android 14 for the Surface Duo and Duo 2 comes from Thai Nguyen, a former Microsoft engineer who previously ported Android 13 to Microsoft's smartphones. The initial release is based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and includes the following: AOSP base image with Google applications The option to turn off the hinge gap on the Surface Duo 2. Settings app icons from the stock Surface Duo ROM. Over-the-air updates for future build updates. Although it is great to see enthusiasts bringing new life to, let's be honest, dead smartphones, the first unofficial Android 14 ROM is raw and unpolished—the developer says users should expect "lots of bugs." Besides, unlike Android 13 for the Surface Duo lineup, Android 14 does not feature the Pixel Experience with its features and enhancements. You can download Android 14 ROM for the Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2 from GitHub. Remember to back up important data before flashing and prepare for bugs, instabilities, and other wonders of using unofficial early-bird software. Those not risking flashing their Surface Duo 2 with third-party ROMs can download the latest firmware update released a few weeks ago. Sadly, there is nothing new but Android security patches. Source

Although nobody has spent significant time with the Surface Duo 2, tech experts are appreciative of the fact that the latest Duo addresses all the major complaints of its predecessor. However, there is one thing that everybody wanted Microsoft to change, and that’s the software update policy. A Microsoft representative has recently confirmed to Android Authority that the latest Surface Duo 2 will get the benefit of three years of OS and security updates. In retrospect, Microsoft promised the same update policy during the launch of Surface Duo—that it would deliver three years of OS and security updates. While three years of updates can be considered decent, its competitors are doing a better job when it comes to software updates. All the latest Galaxy smartphones are eligible to get the benefit from fours years of software updates. To put it in perspective, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 will get fours years of updates, while Surface Duo 2 will stop receiving them three years after launch. You can read our Surface Duo 2 vs Galaxy Z Fold 3 specs battle article here. It’s worth noting that the first generation Duo is yet to receive the Android 11 update, making it the only premium foldable smartphone that is still running Android 10. On the bright side, however, Surface Duo is confirmed to get the Android 11 update by the end of this year, though the exact release date is still not known. The new Surface Duo 2 features Dual PixelSense Fusion Displays (5.8” touchscreens open to 8.3”). The displays also support a 90Hz screen refresh rate and are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. The dual-screen smartphone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor and has a triple camera setup, which is consists of a 12 MP telephoto, a 12 MP wide-angle, and a 16 MP ultra-wide. The Surface Duo also has what is called a Glance Bar, allowing you to check incoming calls and messages, adjust the volume, and check battery life while charging. You can check the full Surface Duo specs here. Microsoft sheds light on its Surface Duo 2 update commitments

While there Surface Duo 2 looks a lot like the original Surface Duo, from a developer point of view there has been a lot of small changes which would mean apps would need to be updated to optimise them for the new handset, including small changes to screen size, aspect ratio and margins for example. If you want to see how your apps run on the Surface Duo 2, or simply want to give the handet a virtual try-out, Microsoft has now made the Surface Duo 2 Android 11 emulator available. The Surface Duo 2 Android Emulator provides a complete dual-screen experience: Running Android 11. Simulates the hinge with a 3D modes view. Supports Jetpack Window Manager APIs for adaptive UI layouts. When used on a touch-screen host device like Microsoft Surface PCs, supports multi-touch and pen sensitivity. Available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Works with Android Studio, Visual Studio, VSCode, and other IDEs used for Android app development. You can download it here. The Surface Duo 2 offers a triple camera setup and Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor for improved performance. Microsoft has also introduced a new, larger Dual PixelSense Fusion Displays (5.8” touchscreens open to 8.3”) with 90Hz refresh for great viewing experience. These displays are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass and support Surface Slim Pen. The new Surface Duo 2 comes with three rear cameras: Wide angle camera, Ultra wide angle camera and Telephoto camera. There is also a ToF sensor for fast auto focus. Microsoft has updated the camera app to take advantage of dual screens. The new Surface Duo Glance Bar allows you to check incoming calls and messages, adjust the volume, and check battery life while charging. Microsoft announces Surface Duo 2 with better cameras, 5G and more
Karlston posted a news in Mobile News
At the annual Surface event, Microsoft has announced the new Surface Duo 2 with new features and an improved experience. Like the original device, the Surface Duo 2 features two 5.8-inch, 1344 x 1892 OLED screens that are connected by a hinge, giving user an 8.3-inch display with 90Hz refresh rate. Microsoft has also added a slight curve at the edge giving users an option to quickly glance the missed notifications, time and more. Both the displays on the Surface Duo 2 are covered with Corning glass for better protection. The device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC which adds 5G support to the device. Apart from that, the device also features Qi wireless charging and NFC. One of the biggest areas of improvement is the camera. While the first-generation Duo featured a single camera, the new Surface Duo 2 features a triple-camera setup that includes a 16MP f/2.2 ultrawide camera, a 12MP f/1.7 wide camera with OIS and a 12MP f/2.4 telephoto camera that also supports OIS. Like other Surface devices, Surface Duo 2 will have support for Surface Slim S Pens. Microsoft has also added an option to stick the S Pen to the side of the device for easy storage when the pen is not in use. Microsoft has also made other optimizations including better dual screen app support and more. These changes are aimed at improving the productivity, which is still Microsoft's main focus. However, the Redmond giant also talked about the gaming performance on the Duo 2. Microsoft claims that there are over 150 games that are optimized for the Surface Duo 2 including Asphalt Legends 9, Modern Combat 5, and Dungeon Hunter 5. The Surface Duo 2 will be shipping with Android 11 out-of-the-box. Microsoft has not disclosed the actual battery life, but the company claims that the Surface Duo 2 can last a day on a single charge. The Surface Duo 2 is priced at $1499.99 and is available for pre-order selected markets starting today. Microsoft announces Surface Duo 2 with better cameras, 5G and more -
Surface Duo 2 FCC listing confirms 5G, WIFI 6, UWB, NFC and “wireless power transfer”
Karlston posted a news in Mobile News
Microsoft is expected to announce the Surface Duo 2 at their upcoming Surface event on the 22nd of September. The FCC has however spoiled their surprise somewhat, revealing the Surface Duo 2 is a significantly updated device that finally matches the standard of other modern-day flagships. The listing confirms that the handset will feature 5G, WIFI 6, UWB, NFC and “wireless power transfer”, all technologies missing from the current version of the device. The WC, who spotted the listing, notes that the Wireless Transfer may however not be wireless charging, but may have to do with charging a Surface Pen wirelessly. An earlier leaked Geekbench listing shows the Microsoft Surface Duo 2 will be powered by Snapdragon 888 chipset coupled with 8GB of RAM, though it doesn’t mean the Duo 2 won’t have a higher RAM variant. It’ll also pack a Adreno 660 GPU for graphics performance and is powered by Android 11. Earlier leaked photos have also shown the device will have 3 rear cameras and a front-facing camera. Microsoft Surface Duo 2 leak reveals much-required camera upgrade
Karlston posted a news in Technology News
Microsoft Surface Duo 2 leak reveals much-required camera upgrade More than cosmetic updates Microsoft’s Surface Duo was arguably the company’s most ambitious hardware project in recent times. Despite a promising form factor, the phone failed to live up to the expectations due to some drawbacks – camera performance being a major one. Now a fresh leak shows off its sequel - the Microsoft Surface Duo 2 in its full glory and Microsoft seems to have persisted with the design that garnered a positive reaction. After all, why fix that ain’t broken. That said, some cosmetic changes are visible and the most prominent one is the presence of a vertically aligned triple camera setup on the rear panel. The camera bump is now more prominent which suggests that Microsoft might use powerful camera sensors this time around. The phone’s slim form factor also makes the camera bump stand out that much more. While the overall design might look fairly similar to the original Surface Duo, however, there are some minor design tweaks like the corners are more rounded than earlier. However, these cosmetic changes are barely noticeable till the time you place both the devices next to each other. Also, the Surface Duo had chunky bezels on the front, thankful, the video claims that the upcoming smartphone may come with a modern design and may have thinner bezels. The metal hinge on the Surface Duo which was liked by many as it allowed users to keep the device partially folded for video calls and media consumption, seems to have been retained. This also confirms the fact that the Surface Duo 2 will continue to sport two separate screens which are in contrast to most other Android makers who’re busy making phones with foldable or rollable displays. Microsoft Surface Duo 2 launch date According to the leak, the Surface Duo 2 is expected to launch sometime in September or October and will start retailing right after the launch. This, however, may coincide with multiple other major devices like iPhone 13 series and the new Pixel lineup which is expected to include a foldable Pixel as well. Samsung’s latest foldable phones are slated to launch slightly earlier in August however might start retailing on a global level around the time the Surface Duo hits the market. Last but not the least, the price of Surface Duo was reduced multiple times making it extremely affordable. One of the primary reasons behind the cold response to the Surface Duo was its high price despite the dated hardware. Microsoft is expected to correct his as well and while the Surface Duo 2 may have the latest hardware under the hood, it is expected to be priced aggressively as well. With all these updates in place, we can only hope that Microsoft launches the phone at a global level rather than limiting it to a handful of countries. Surface Duo 2 benchmarks confirm Snapdragon 888 SoC and 8GB of RAM
Karlston posted a news in Mobile News
Back in 2019, Microsoft finally unveiled its first Android handset, namely a dual-display device called the Surface Duo. While the device underwhelmed in terms of critic reviews and commercial performance, many praised it for its stylish form factor. Just over a month ago, supposed images of the upcoming Surface Duo 2 leaked, giving a hint at some of the hardware changes, especially camera improvements. Now, the handset has been spotted on Geekbench, which confirms some key specifications. The alleged Surface Duo 2 | Image via Tech Rat The Geekbench report, which can be seen here, shows the Surface Duo 2 scoring a single-core score of 1,091 and a multi-core score of 3,517. For reference, the Samsung Galaxy S21+ 5G has scores of 972 and 3052, respectively. Similarly, the OnePlus 9R charts at 940 and 2,970, respectively. While this would indicate decent performance from the Surface Duo 2, it is important to note that Geekbench scores aren't necessarily indicative of real-world performance, and can be quite easily manipulated in a device's favor. Perhaps the more interesting bits are related to the device's internals. The benchmark indicates that the Surface Duo 2 will boast a Snapdragon 888 chipset and 8GB of RAM. This is sizeable upgrade over the Surface Duo which launched with Snapdragon 855 and 6GB of RAM. At the time of running the benchmark, it was purportedly running Android 11, but of course, this could change by the time that Android 12 hits general availability and the Surface Duo 2 hits the market. Again, it is important to remember that specifications on Geekbench can be doctored, but Windows Central has confirmed that these are indeed the Surface Duo 2's specifications. Other known specifications of the handset include a triple-camera array containing a standard main camera, a telephoto lens, and an ultra-wide shooter. This is a major upgrade over the disappointing camera present in the first-generation Surface Duo. Given the internals of the Surface Duo 2, we can expect the device to launch towards the end of the calendar year. That said, pricing will once be a key factor in terms of how the market responds to the handset. We talked in detail about how, at its $1,399 launch price, the Surface Duo was tragically overpriced. Microsoft has been offering massive discounts on the handset quite frequently since its launch. Surface Duo 2 benchmarks confirm Snapdragon 888 SoC and 8GB of RAM -

The Microsoft Surface Duo 2 gets its first post-launch firmware update
Karlston posted a news in Mobile News
The Microsoft Surface Duo 2 has only been officially released two days ago, and Microsoft is already ready with its first post-launch firmware update. As can be expected the update is designed to address any bugs not caught before shipping. It takes the firmware to version 2021.827.34 and has the following changelog: 2021.827.34 – Improves the stability of the device Like the Surface Duo, Microsoft has promised 3 years of software updates for the Surface Duo 2, though we know when it comes to OS updates Microsoft has been rather lacklustre, still not shipping Android 11 for the original device of course. Three years is also not the best in the industry with all the latest Galaxy smartphones eligible to get the benefit from fours years of software updates. To put it in perspective, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 will get fours years of updates, while Surface Duo 2 will stop receiving them three years after launch. Microsoft Surface Duo 2 reportedly discontinued, may not get any more Android OS updates

In September 2021, Microsoft announced the Surface Duo 2 Android 11 smartphone. It was a slight redesign of the original dual-screen Surface Duo, but with some higher-end hardware like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor and three rear cameras. The price for the smartphone at launch was a hefty $1,499.99. Since the phone launched, Microsoft has released a number of firmware updates, including one in May 2023 that reportedly caused lots of issues for owners of the Surface Duo 2. The last Android OS update for the phone was back in October 2022, when it got upgraded to Android 12L. Today, it looks like the final nail in the poorly received Surface Duo 2's coffin has been hammered. Windows Central reports, via unnamed sources, that the phone has been discontinued by Microsoft. That means that the company is no longer making new units of the phone, although there might be some remaining phones in stock at certain retailers. While the phone is currently scheduled to receive Android security updates until at least October 2024, it's looking very unlikely it will get any more Android OS updates beyond 12L. Windows Central was unable to get any comments from Microsoft on plans to update the phone with the current Android 13 version or the upcoming Android 14. That means the phone will likely only get that one OS update from nearly a year ago. Since the companies behind a lot of recent high-end Android phones have promised at least three or more major OS updates, this is pretty disappointing news. Owners do have the option of getting an unofficial Android 13 update, which was developed by a former Microsoft team member. Today's story adds, via unnamed sources, that a "majority" of the software team for the Surface Duo 2 has been transferred to working on the Android version of Teams Rooms. Earlier this year, online reports claimed that Microsoft had abandoned plans to make the Surface Duo 3, and had instead decided to work on a true foldable phone. There's been no word on the status of that project since then. There have also been unconfirmed reports Microsoft could be working on some standard non-foldable Android phones. Source
