  1. Netflix is currently testing a new search engine powered by OpenAI's artificial intelligence technology. It could change the way how users discover movies and TV shows on the platform. Existing search options and algorithms have primarily focused on genres, actors, to recommend new content to watch, based on a user's viewing history. The new AI-powered feature allows subscribers of the streaming service to search for media using specific terms, including mood-based keywords, and provides tailored recommendations that go beyond traditional machine learning methods. The move towards advanced search functionality comes as Netflix continues to diversify its offerings, to attract more users. In recent months, the streaming giant has introduced live programming, such as sporting events. These initiatives suggest that Netflix is keen on enhancing engagement and expanding its entertainment portfolio for subscribers. Financially, the company appears to be on solid ground. In its Q4 2024 report, Netflix registered a 16% year-over-year increase in revenue, accompanied by a remarkable 52% rise in operating income, culminating in a total of 302 million subscribers, which was largely aided by the introduction of its cheaper, ad-supported plan. These impressive figures signify the platform's growing appeal and effectiveness in adapting to industry trends and subscriber demands. Netflix's enhanced search capability promises to offer a more refined experience, giving users greater options in their quest to find content that resonates with their current interests. The integration of AI and enhanced search tools may play a pivotal role in retaining and attracting viewers, further cementing its position in the competitive streaming landscape. Netflix's new search experience is currently available on iOS devices in Australia and New Zealand, but it is an opt-in feature, as in the user would need to test it out manually. The Verge reports that Netflix spokesperson MoMo Zhou said this "learn and listen phase" of the beta test is crucial for gathering user feedback, and that the AI-powered search is expected to be made available in other markets, including the United States in the near future. 2. OpenAI may be about to go after Google's main source of income. The generative AI company will reportedly reveal it will launch its own AI-based search engine on Monday, May 13. The report comes from Reuters, citing unnamed sources. It does add that the actual date of the AI search engine announcement could change. If it does stick with the May 13 date, it will come just one day before Google's annual I/O developers conference on May 14. Earlier this week, Bloomberg reported, again via unnamed sources, that the search engine will use its ChatGPT AI chatbot as its base. It will reportedly search for answers on the web to questions and inquiries and will also cite citations for its search results. An OpenAI search engine would not only compete with Google Search and Microsoft's Bing search engine, it would also be competing with another AI-based search startup called Perplexity. That company, founded by a former OpenAI researcher, recently secured $73.6 million in Series B funding from investors like Nvidia and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Google has also been working on its own AI-based search engine called the SGE (Search Generative Experience) in its Search Labs. While Microsoft continues to be a major financial and development partner to OpenAI, the company that's has its co-founder Sam Altman as its CEO has been branching off and reportedly making other deals. In late April, it was reported that OpenAI had entered into discussions with Apple. The two companies reportedly had talks about adding AI tech into Apple's next version of its iPhone operating system, iOS 18. Earlier this week, OpenAI revealed it had started testing an AI "deepfake" detector so that images that were created by the company's DALL-E AI art maker could be identified as being made by that model. There's no word on when that tool will be officially released. Source
  3. Bloomberg has revealed that Apple has been working on powerful search technology for its apps to essentially improve its software, hone its search skills… and use it as a bargaining chip with Google. Google has to pay Apple a handsome figure to keep its search engine as the default on Apple products, now that Apple has its own search technology as leverage, it can squeeze greater sums of money out of Google. According to Bloomberg, Apple is already using its new search technology (codenamed Pegasus) in some of its apps but very soon it will also be arriving on the App Store. One area Apple already couples its search technology with Google Search is in Spotlight where it has previously added the ability to point users to sites that could answer their questions. While Apple has not launched its own search engine, it has still been very interested in the field. At the end of September, it was reported that Microsoft entered exploratory talks with Apple in 2020 to sell off its Bing search engine to the iPhone maker. Ultimately, Apple never bought Bing but it has still continued to work on its search abilities for its own software. By maintaining the ability to launch a good search engine, Apple can use it as leverage against Google to make the search firm pay up more money to keep its engine as the default on Apple’s operating systems. While not the case everywhere, in more affluent countries, iOS makes up a large portion of mobile market share; it’s more popular than Android in some places. As a result, it’s likely Google would pay more money to Apple to remain the default search engine as not doing so could have a significant impact on its traffic. While it’s still unlikely that Apple will launch a search engine, we cannot forget about Apple Maps. Apple decided to launch this despite the dominant position of Google Maps and could ultimately do the same with a search engine if it wanted to. Source: Bloomberg Source
  4. The AI search company Perplexity told the Financial Times it saw 250 million queries in the last month compared to 500 million for the whole of last year. Perplexity uses a large language model, like ChatGPT. It also relies on the latest data from the web to answer queries, not just its training data. While it’s true that ChatGPT can now search the web, this wasn’t the case when Perplexity launched, making it especially useful. OpenAI has announced a direct competitor to Perplexity called SearchGPT. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future. Perplexity's Dmitry Shevelenko, the company's chief business officer, reported the stats to the FT. Commenting on the company's size, he said it has a few advantages, namely velocity and focus. This is in contrast to Google, which has the world's biggest traditional search engine. Google was initially slow in the AI race and is still figuring things out. OpenAI is doing many different things and isn't as focused on search as Perplexity is, Shevelenko said. He believes Perplexity's sole focus on search will allow it to stay ahead of OpenAI. Not too long ago, several publications accused Perplexity of plagiarism. The publications said it had been trained on their content without permission. Shevelenko, speaking to the FT, said that the company took the criticisms on board. Perplexity now displays citations more prominently. It also doesn't summarize any content from websites. Finally, Shevelenko mentioned Perplexity's new revenue-sharing program. He said that 50 publishers have already asked to join it. It could placate publications as they'll get paid for their cited content. Despite its rising popularity, Perplexity is still prone to errors. For this reason, it is good to go to the sources and check what they say. Have you ever used Perplexity? Let us know in the comments about your experience with it and whether you've had many incorrect responses. Source: Financial Times Source Hope you enjoyed this news post.
