Windows 11's built-in share tool is getting an image editor and compression feature
Karlston posted a news in Software News
Spotted in the latest Windows 11 preview build, it looks like Microsoft is working on adding image editing tools to the file share UI across the OS. Microsoft appears to be working on a big update to the system wide share UI on Windows 11 that will introduce image editing and compression features when attempting to share an image using the OS share function. Spotted as a hidden feature in the latest Windows 11 preview build, when enabled you'll be able to crop, rotate, highlight, draw, and even compress an image before sending it to the app of your choice. The Windows 11 share UI has been tweaked and updates quite a bit in the last couple of years. Most recently, it was updated with a refined interface and integration with Windows Phone Link, letting you share files between your PC and phone with just a few clicks. Additionally, Microsoft has been working on new ways to access the share tool, including via a new drop-down interface that appears at the top of your screen when you grab a file in the File Explorer app. The compression feature will let you shrink the size of an image before upload. (Image credit: @Phantomofearth on X) It's clear that Microsoft wants users to start using the built-in share tool more often across Windows 11. Personally, I almost never use it, mostly because I forget it exists. The introduction of the share drop down menu and editing tools within the share interface are nice additions, which all help streamline the file sharing process, especially for images. With the new editing tools, when you share an image, you'll be given the option to edit or compress the image directly within the share UI. If you choose to edit it, you'll be given a simple image editing UI that lets you crop and rotate the image, mark it up with digital ink, adjust colors and brightness, and apply filters. The compression option will let you adjust how much compression is applied to the photo, reducing the overall side of the image, which can be handy if you're trying to upload to an app or webpage that has a file size limit. It's nice to see Microsoft adding these small quality of life improvements to Windows 11. Let's hope more are on the way! Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. Snipping Tool is getting a handy new feature for screen recording
Karlston posted a news in Software News
Microsoft finished this week with a couple of Windows 11 preview builds for Windows Insiders, plus a fresh update to the Snipping Tool app. The operating system's default screenshot-taking utility is getting a handy feature for those frequently recording their screens. Snipping Tool version 11.2501.7.0, which is currently rolling out to Windows Insiders, introduces a video trimming tool. With the latest update, you can record something on your screen and then cut off unnecessary parts without leaving Snipping Tool or launching Clipchamp or any other video editor. Here is what Microsoft says in the announcement: In addition to screen recording trimming, Microsoft is working on new OCR capabilities with a dedicated shortcut. The feature was spotted by the end of 2024, and we are still waiting for Microsoft to announce it. Other Windows Insider updates announced today include several new features and improvements for Copilot+ PCs, new Start menu layouts, and a brand-new method to share files from your PC to another device. You can learn more about those changes here and here. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. Thank you for appreciating my time and effort posting news every day for many years. Windows Subsystem for Android on Windows 11 preview adds localhost loopback support for LAN
Karlston posted a news in Software News
Microsoft has released the latest monthly update for the preview version of Windows Subsystem for Android on Windows 11. The new version number is 2308.40000.3.0 and is available for all members of the Windows Insider Preview program. The blog post lists the new features and improvements in this new version. It has mostly the same change log info as the version that was released earlier this month on Github. However, this new version lacks the "Correctly report isInMultiWindowMode=false when an app is fullscreen" that was added to the Github version. Platform reliability improvements Localhost loopback support for “Local network access” experimental feature Clipboard reliability and performance improvements Kernel update to improve compatibility with running ARM applications on x64 processors Microsoft says that people who use the feature and experience any issues with it can file their feedback via the Insider Feedback Hub under Apps > Windows Subsystem for Android. You can also check out the Troubleshooting and FAQ for mobile apps on Windows site. Android developers can also offer feedback for the new version on Microsoft's Github page. Before installing WSA on your device, make sure it meets Microsoft's minimum hardware requirements. Those specific ardware requirements for WSA are available to view here. You can also download Windows Subsystem for Android with the Amazon App Store from the Microsoft Store on compatible PCs running Windows 11. Developers who would like to run Android apps on Windows 11 with this subsystem should check out its Microsoft GitHub page for this very subject. The same page also lets you report a bug in the subsystem, submit requests for a new feature, or report if something is wrong with the subsystem's documentation. You can also just simply interact with other Android-to-Windows developers on the page as well. Source-

This update addresses an issue that affects the PublishDfsRoots policy. It does not apply correctly to a targeted client that has mobile device management (MDM). One example of MDM is Microsoft Intune. This update changes the international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI) ranges for certain mobile providers. This update addresses an issue that affects the Windows Firewall. The firewall drops all connections to the IP address of a captive portal. This occurs when you choose the Captive Portal Addresses option. This update addresses an issue that affects devices that are joined to Azure Active Directory (Azure AD). The Windows Firewall cannot apply the correct domain and profile for them. This update addresses an issue that affects signed Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC) policies. This update addresses a known issue that might affect some speech recognition apps. They might have sporadic speech recognition, expressive input, and handwriting issues. This occurs when the display language is Chinese or Japanese. The apps might not recognize certain words. They might not receive any input from speech recognition or affected input types. This issue is more likely to occur when the apps use offline speech recognition. For app developers, this issue only affects speech recognition that uses Speech Recognition Grammar Specification (SRGS) in Windows.Media.SpeechRecognition. This issue does not affect other types of speech recognition. Known issues in this update Symptoms Devices with Windows installations created from custom offline media or custom ISO image might have Microsoft Edge Legacy removed by this update, but not automatically replaced by the new Microsoft Edge. This issue is only encountered when custom offline media or ISO images are created by slipstreaming this update into the image without having first installed the standalone servicing stack update (SSU) released March 29, 2021 or later. Note Devices that connect directly to Windows Update to receive updates are not affected. This includes devices using Windows Update for Business. Any device connecting to Windows Update should always receive the latest versions of the SSU and latest cumulative update (LCU) without any extra steps. Workaround To avoid this issue, be sure to first slipstream the SSU released March 29, 2021 or later into the custom offline media or ISO image before slipstreaming the LCU. To do this with the combined SSU and LCU packages now used for Windows 10, version 20H2 and Windows 10, version 2004, you will need to extract the SSU from the combined package. Use the following steps to extract the SSU: Extract the cab from the msu via this command line (using the package for KB5000842 as an example): expand Windows10.0-KB5000842-x64.msu /f:Windows10.0-KB5000842-x64.cab Extract the SSU from the previously extracted cab via this command line: expand Windows10.0-KB5000842-x64.cab /f:* You will then have the SSU cab, in this example named SSU-19041.903-x64.cab. Slipstream this file into your offline image first, then the LCU. If you have already encountered this issue by installing the OS using affected custom media, you can mitigate it by directly installing the new Microsoft Edge. If you need to broadly deploy the new Microsoft Edge for business, see Download and deploy Microsoft Edge for business. To get this update as a standalone package, download the appropriate package from the Microsoft Update Catalog. Microsoft releases KB5026435 (OS Build 19045.3031) Preview for Windows 10 22H2 -
