  1. Earlier today, news emerged about Microsoft killing Skype. Insider the app's code, users discovered a message stating that the platform will be retired in a couple of months. Now, just several hours later, we have an official confirmation from Microsoft: Skype is dead. Microsoft published a blog post on the official website where it acknowledged the rumors: Although the writing has been on the wall for quite a while, it is still sad to see Skype going away. For many years, it was the go-to service for voice and video calls and instant messages. However, Microsoft failed to keep Skype up with the times. Despite several attempts to make Skype cool and hip, the platform kept declining, and it was unable to compete with Zoom, FaceTime, Google Meet, and other, more popular services. Now, Microsoft recommends switching from Skype to Teams, which offers the same features plus a lot more. In a few days, Teams will receive an update to let Skype users sign in with their profiles and transfer their chats, contacts, and other data. Also, during the transition period, Microsoft will let Skype and Teams users talk to each other in messages and calls. If you do not want to move to Teams, you can export your Skype data, but make sure to do so before May 5, 2025. Paid users can continue using paid features beyond May 5, 2025, until the end of their current period. The Skype Dial Pad will be available in the Skype web portal and Microsoft Teams. You can read more about the upcoming end of Skype here. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. Thank you for appreciating my time and effort posting news every day for many years. 2. Microsoft is rolling out another big update for Skype Insiders. Version 8.112.76.203 is available for download on all supported platforms with new PDF thumbnails, improvements for Skype's media composer on Android, new features for the calling UI, and more. With the latest update, you can preview PDF documents in chats. Instead of the standard icon, Skype now shows the first page of the PDF you received, giving you a sneak peek into the file without opening it. Microsoft says the new PDF thumbnails make documents "a clear, identifiable part of your conversation." Skype's media composer on Android now provides instant access to GIFs and stickers. These media are now only one tap away from your keyboard. In addition, the updated composer lets you copy and paste or drag and drop images and videos on tablets and foldables. The calling UI is also getting some love from developers. One-on-one Skype calls now support resizing and moving your video preview to any corner of the screen. The app will remember your preferences, so you do not have to change them every time someone calls you. Finally, there is a new way to switch between cameras: just tap your video preview to move from the front to the back camera. Every Skype update includes a few minor improvements and fixes, and version 8.112 is no exception. Here is what was fixed in the latest release: You can download the latest Skype Insider update from the official website. Source

  7. Skype has issued an apology after a bug caused some users to receive a flood of repeated push notifications over the past few days. The issue is believed to have initially affected a small number of users and was caused by a glitch in the app that resulted in multiple notifications being sent for the same message. Since last week, users have reportedly received repeated notifications about chats and new features. For example, one user tweeted that they received an hourly notification about Skype's video chat feature. Some users have also reported receiving a flood of notifications, sometimes up to 10 times for a single new message. In a statement today, Skype apologized for the problem and said, "We are aware of this issue and are actively working to resolve it as soon as possible. We will update you on the progress and when the fix is in place." However, it is not clear what platforms or versions are affected by this issue. In the meantime, affected users can minimize notifications by going into the app's settings. You can also go to the Notifications panel to turn off notifications completely. In there, notifications for messages, features (Tips and Tricks), reactions, and more can be turned off. This will disable notifications until a permanent fix is implemented. While we are on the topic of Skype, in case you missed it,, last week, Microsoft pushed Skype Preview version 8.103.76.101. It brought drag-and-drop enhancements, performance uplifts for the GIF picker, and general stability improvements to the app. The Preview version is available on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and Linux. 9. Microsoft has announced the latest feature update for Skype. Version 8.102.76.210 is now available for those testing early updates before Microsoft ships them to the general public. In today's update, Skype received improvements for the file download experience with a "sleeker, more intuitive file design" and the ability to auto-download files in chats. In addition, version 8.102 resolves the bug with non-working cameras and crashes when scheduling calls. What is new in Skype 8.102.76.210? 10. A new report claims that there is a serious flaw in Microsoft's Skype chat mobile apps that could allow a hacker to detect a user's IP address. The flaw is reportedly enabled just by sending a link through Skype's text message feature, and the link does not have to be clicked on for the IP address to be revealed. The new flaw, as reported by 404Media.co, was first discovered by an independent security researcher who goes by the handle "Yossi". The article describes how this issue worked: To start, Yossi sent me a link via Skype text chat to google.com. The link was to the real Google site, and not an imposter. I then opened Skype on an iPad and viewed the chat message. I didn’t even click the link. But very soon after, Yossi pasted my IP address into the chat. It was correct. The article adds that this issue only affects Skype's mobile apps and does not appear to work on Skype on the desktop. Details about how this issue works on the hacker side were not revealed for security reasons, but the article claims the flaw is "trivially easy to exploit and involves changing a certain parameter related to the link." Yossi sent over his info about the flaw to Microsoft. The company's initial response to Yossi was that the IP address exposure in Skype "does not meet the definition of a security vulnerability for servicing which would require immediate servicing." However, when 404media.com asked Microsoft for comment, the company did state that while this issue with Skype was not an immediate security issue based just on the IP address exposure, "we will be addressing it in a future product update as a defense in depth improvement to help keep customers protected." As of this writing, Microsoft has yet to fix this problem. Source
  11. Microsoft has released a new version of its Skype messaging service for members of the Skype Insider program. The new build number is 8.106.76.206. It has a new call experience for its mobile apps, a new camera revamp for its Android app, and a way to add Bing to one-on-one chats. Here is the changelog. You can check out the full blog post here: If you use Skype and do not mind trying early updates before the public rollout, head to the official Skype Insider website to enroll in the program. Skype previews are available on Windows 10 and 11, macOS, Linux, and Android. Source
  12. If you're facing the "Skype your connection is too weak error," rest assured that you're not the only one experiencing this issue. Undoubtedly, Skype is widely popular globally as a widely-used application for video calling, video conferencing, and voice calling. However, like any other app in its category, Skype is prone to encountering bugs or errors. A specific instance involves users encountering difficulties making video calls after installing the v8.95 update. Currently, some individuals are facing challenges when trying to initiate calls to mobile devices or landlines. A significant number of Skype users are currently facing the "Skype your connection is too weak error" when they try to make calls to mobiles and landlines. This error typically occurs due to a poor or unstable connection. Users report receiving an error message that states, "Your connection is too weak, please try later," when initiating calls via Skype. Adding to the frustration, some individuals are also encountering sudden call disconnections within seconds of starting the call, further aggravating the problem. This persistent issue has been ongoing for the past few days, primarily affecting users making calls to China. How to fix the Skype your connection is too weak error? Unfortunately there's no official method to fix this error right now. Although, Skype has acknowledged the presence of this issue and has taken responsibility for its resolution. The Skype team is actively working to address the "Skype your connection is too weak error." However, they have not yet provided an estimated time for when the bug fix will be implemented. Rest assured, Skype is putting in considerable effort to rectify the problem and restore normal functionality, aiming to ensure a seamless calling experience for its users. Image source: Unsplash “We have identified the cause of this incident and are actively working on fixing it. Some users might be experiencing problems when calling mobiles and landlines from Skype. Unexpected call drops might also occur. Users may be unable to make Skype Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) calls to Chinese numbers,” stated Skype. It is crucial for Microsoft to acknowledge and prioritize the concerns of its users, ensuring a smooth and reliable calling experience on Skype. Source
  13. Skype, your beloved VoIP service and messenger, has been updated to version 8.99.76.102 in the Skype Insider program. Testers can try out the latest batch of new features and changes before Microsoft pushes them to the general public in the later update. Build 8.99 contains a few notable improvements and new options, such as integration with Microsoft Weather, reworked call tabs, improved Bing integration, and more. What is new in Skype 8.99? Microsoft Weather now lets you check out the forecast without leaving Skype. Click the weather icon next to your profile, and Skype will open a side pane with a detailed forecast courtesy of Microsoft Weather, allegedly one of the most accurate weather providers. Reworked call tabs make it easier to distinguish Skype-to-Skype and Skype-to-Phone calls. Those two are now separate tabs, each offering specific features. For example, the Skype-to-Skype tab has prominent buttons to initiate a new video or audio call, while the Skype-to-Phone tab provides quick info about your subscription, current balance, and more. Prioritized Skype contacts on the Contacts tab. Skype contacts now sit on top of other people, making it easier to quickly find the person you need to chat with on Skype. Interactive Bing Chat prompts provide you with fun and fresh ideas to talk about with Microsoft's AI. For example, Skype can offer you to speak with Bing about inventing a new gadget, make it tell you a joke, or entertain in another way. Microsoft says those prompts shuffle every time you launch Skype. Bing toolbox is another improvement for the Bing 1:1 chat in Skype. It offers various tools and methods for interaction with the service, like education, social media, travel, creativity, entertainment, language, sports, or technology. Other changes in Skype 8.99 Preview include instant access to Bing Chat (no more waiting in line), redesigned landing page illustration, consecutive audio messages auto-play, and a single fix for the search bar blocking the top chat on iPad. 15. Microsoft has released a new build for members of the Skype Insider program. 16. Five years ago, Microsoft attempted to give Skype users a breath of fresh air by redesigning the app across the platforms. Customers were unhappy with Microsoft trying to modernize Skype with questionable UI and uncalled features (you want stories in Skype?), so they forced the company to undo the damage and return to the drawing board. Now Microsoft is ready to rejuvenate Skype once again. The company says it has redesigned the Skype experience to be "more delightful and fun." The app now features a brand-new interface with fresh illustrations, new emoticons, better performance, and reliability improvements. You will even spot the iconic clouds from "the good old days" of Skype. Overall, Microsoft wants to keep its messenger familiar, fresh, and modern, so users should not be shocked or feel lost after installing the update. Skype on mobile devices now features improved colourful themes with more prominent and vibrant colours throughout the app and enhanced accessibility. You will also find recognizable Skype elements, such as clouds and animated emoticons. It is not all UI and graphics. Skype for iOS and Android has received the same new calling experience Microsoft added to desktops last year. Users can pick the light theme for calling, select backgrounds for participants without video, and enjoy better controls during video calls. Microsoft also promises technical improvements that ensure any video call performs well and remains stable no matter how many people participate (Skype supports up to 100 people per call). Finally, the redesigned Skype offers a new "Today" tab with personalized articles and news stories from "trusted sources all over the world." Users can read and share those stories without signing up for a subscription. You can read more about the latest improvements for Skype, including the new TruVoice real-time translation feature, in the official blog. Microsoft announces major Skype redesign with more 'delightful and fun' experience
  17. Microsoft continues breaking the language barrier by giving Skype users more tools for translating chats and calls. The latest Skype update introduces real-time translation for video calls with your personal voice (TruVoice), allowing your interlocutor to hear the translation as you would speak it. It is a technology Microsoft demoed eight years ago, and now it is available for all customers for free. TruVoice is a big step for Skype in its mission to let people communicate with those whose language they do not know. Now you can ditch robotic voices and enjoy translation that sounds just like the person you are talking to. The AI that powers the feature uses several tools to do its magic. Microsoft says Skype Translator combines speech recognition with natural language processing, then samples your words to tune the translation and make it sound like you, achieving a more comfortable and human-like conversation. Microsoft also lets you disable the TruVoice feature and switch to standard robotic voices. You can see how the two options compare in the video below: The new translation capabilities in Skype support English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, and other languages. For now, TruVoice is available only in one-to-one calls, but Microsoft promises to upgrade group calls and Telephony in the next few months. You can learn more about real-time translations with your personal voice in a post on the official Skype Blog. Skype gets real-time video calls translation "TruVoice" with your personal voice

The ability to sign in with a QR code is one of the features Microsoft is testing with Skype Insiders. It is also testing the ‘What’s new’ link, and clicking on it will reveal all the changes added in an update. ‘Sign in with QR code’ and ‘What’s New’ links can be found on the user avatar/user name page. Another new functionality is the clickable or tappable message, which allows users to open the chat panel in the side bar and then navigate to the message by clicking the text over a user’s feed. 24. Update also improves AI image features, adds OneAuth support on iOS. If you've used Microsoft's Skype in recent years, you've probably noticed that the user experience is less than ideal because of the pervasiveness of ads in the software. Fortunately, that's going to change in a new update coming to all platforms in the near future. In the latest release notes for Skype Insider build 8.125, product manager Irene Namuganyi writes, "We’re excited to announce that Skype is now ad-free! Our latest update removes all ads from Skype channels and the entire Skype platform, ensuring a smoother, decluttered, and more enjoyable user experience." Whereas there were previously ads in the "today" section of the application, it will now be ad-free, showing just the relevant newsfeed content. There won't be any ads in conversation views, either. Other major features in the Skype update include improved AI image creation—you can now more directly access the feature from the chat window or top bar, the UI has been improved, and other improvements—and the introduction of OneAuth integration on the iOS app. (OneAuth was already supported on Skype for Android.) Skype isn't the behemoth of online communication it was long ago, though it's still popular for international calls in many cases, and it still has quite a few users. But this update is interesting in the larger context of Microsoft's software strategy. Ads have been popping up all over Windows and other Microsoft experiences, like the Start menu. Anyone who's using Windows or Microsoft's web services right now is too familiar with the company's aggressive efforts to get users to start using the Edge web browser or to try the Copilot AI tool. Does this Skype update herald a scaling back of that approach to the company's software business in response to criticism about a less-than-ideal user experience? We have no way of knowing, but this is nice to see if you're still a frequent Skype user. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. 25. Several weeks ago, Microsoft made a surprising announcement about making Skype, one of the original VoIP services, completely ad-free. In the latest Skype Insider preview build, Microsoft ditched all ads across the service, making the messenger more appealing. Now, there is another build to try in the Skype Insider program. Version 8.127 was fully released, but there are no big new features or substantial changes. Instead, developers focused on stability and performance improvements, bug fixes, and other minor changes. Here is the complete changelog: While it is true that Skype is no longer the go-to choice when it comes to messaging or calls, it is far from dead, and regular Skype Insider updates prove that Microsoft is not willing to ditch its ill-fated messenger.
