  1. Towards the end of March this year, Microsoft announced that it would soon start prompting users to back up and sync their files to OneDrive. The company published the news on its Microsoft 365 (M365) Admin Center portal, where it said that "eligible" M365 users will be prompted to do so. The tech giant is making backup a big part of Windows 11 as well with a new migration tool inside its official Backup app. Microsoft shared a list of all the advantages of OneDrive's known folder move (KFM) to help users and admins understand why such a move would be beneficial to end users, aside from the obvious one of backup. It wrote: However, similar to the other recent delays for Microsoft 365 (M365) feature rollouts like unified app management for M365 products and changes to the New Outlook enablement option, the OneDrive prompts schedule has been pushed back too. A new M365 Admin Center message ID has been issued as well, and the feature is not arriving before June 2025. Microsoft writes: Despite all these delays, there is a big positive regarding M365 apps that the company announced recently. Neowin, a few days ago, noticed that Microsoft had quietly extended support for the service on Windows 10 up to 2028. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. 2. Microsoft recently reminded users about the end of support for Windows 10, which is less than six months away. As such, there is now a Linux-backed project called "End of 10" that is trying to guide users to make the switch. Another big related change Microsoft announced back in January this year was about the end of support for Microsoft 365 (M365) apps like Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, Word, Excel, and more on Windows 10. The tech giant at that time stated that the apps would no longer be supported on 10 after the OS support ended. It wrote: However, it looks like Microsoft has had a big change of heart. On a Tech Commnunity blog post about Windows 10 extended security updates (ESU) it recently updated, the company has confirmed that Microsoft 365 apps will be supported for another three years till 2028. Neowin noticed this new addition while browsing. On a linked support document, Microsoft has given more details about it, with more specific details, even though the company still recommends moving to Windows 11. It says: Another related support article has been updated too, and like the previous one, Microsoft has encouraged users to make the move to Windows 11 in order to "avoid performance and reliability issues over time" on Microsoft 365 apps. This one says: This is a good move from Microsoft considering many users will find it difficult to upgrade to Windows 11 due to the stringent system requirements of the latter. 3. If you are familiar with Microsoft's tactics, you know how the company makes every effort to try and get users on Windows 10 to update to Windows 11. For example, recently we noticed how Microsoft suggested a clean installation of the latter in order to use the Windows 11 exclusive Smart App Control security feature. Quite stupidly perhaps, Microsoft does not seem to make this process any friendlier as it recently blocked the popular BYPASSNRO script used to get by internet and MSA requirements during Windows 11 installs. Interestingly, there is also an official way to do so that is endorsed by Microsoft itself. Like Windows 11, Microsoft also wants users, like business owners, to consider moving on from Office to Microsoft 365. It has highlighted the various limitations of working offline, among other things. It writes: Microsoft thus believes that this is the "perfect time" to get Microsoft 365, and it also has "numbers to prove" why it is right, especially considering Office 2016 and 2019 reach the end of support later this year alongside Windows 10. It explains: You can find the blog post here on Microsoft's official Tech Community website. Microsoft pulled a similar "commissioned study" stunt back in October 2024 in the case of Windows 11 vs 10. If you missed that story, the company actually compared differently-abled devices to prove Windows 11 was better. Unfortunately for Microsoft 365, many IT admins and system admins feel that the New Outlook for Windows app is "hot garbage", and a lot of Neowin readers feel the same way too. Not everything is bad, though, as there is some performance boost in the pipeline too. If you are on Windows 10, it is noteworthy here that users must move to Windows 11 too before November or else all Microsoft 365 updates will stop. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. 4. Back in September 2024, Microsoft shared a helpful guide to help users improve the startup performance on Windows. Startup or load time performance can be a problem for Office apps, too, and to help with that, the company has announced that it is launching a new "Startup Boost" task. The feature will be rolling out initially in Word and then later on with other Office applications like Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, among others. Microsoft informed about it on the Microsoft 365 admin center portal. The tech giant has explained how it will work and when the feature will be available. It writes: Additionally, the company has stated that the feature will only work on systems with 8 GB of memory or more and 5 GB of disk space or more. Thus, it appears to be some form of caching, which will help load these tasks up fast. The tech giant explains: IT admins and system admins who have access to the Microsoft 365 admin center portal will be able to view the message under ID MC1041470. 5. Back in December last year, 2024, Microsoft announced via the Microsoft 365 admin center that Enterprise users would be switched over to the New Outlook for Windows from Classic Outlook in April of 2026. At the time, the company also informed via a support article that Business plan users running the Current Channel would also be gradually made to switch over to the New Outlook. In the article, Microsoft stated: More clarity was provided later as it wrote: Following that, recently, Microsoft made a change to the deployment guidance for New Outlook for Windows. Neowin noticed while browsing that the tech giant has begun including the New Outlook app by default on new Microsoft 365 (M365) deployments, although it is giving admins the option to include both New and Classic Outlooks, or just one of them. Microsoft explains: If you are wondering, version 2502 of Microsoft 365 Apps was released on the current channel earlier this month on March 5, and the size of the update was around 60 MB. The latest build available for version 2502 is 18526.20168. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. Thank you for appreciating my time and effort posting news every day for many years. 6. Microsoft this week made a major announcement for IT admins and system administrators via the Microsoft 365 message center. The tech giant has notified that it will soon begin prompting "eligible" users about backing up their Microsoft 365 app files, mainly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, to OneDrive. The message also adds details about when the preview starts and when the move hits general availability. From the looks of it, it does not appear to be too far away as the public preview is set for "mid-March 2025" which means Microsoft will likely start prompting such users next week onwards. It says: Microsoft, in its documentation, had already explained the advantages of OneDrive known folder move (KFM). It says: However, in the new M365 message, the company has added some more points as to how KFM can help users. First and foremost, Microsoft has pointed out Copilot support. Aside from that, it has also mentioned easy collaboration, easy access remotely, as well as additional security and protection from data loss. It says: If you have access, you can find the message on the M365 message center under message ID "MC1024398". Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. 7. Back in 2023, Microsoft launched a new feature for Microsoft Defender users called Privacy protection. Privacy protection is a secure VPN service that protects users when they connect their devices via open and public Wi-Fi networks. It reduces online tracking since it hides IP addresses and locations from websites, apps, and advertisers. Additionally, hackers won't be able to intercept user data since the data is encrypted. Last year, Microsoft expanded Defender's Privacy protection feature availability to Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android in the UK, , and Canada. Microsoft also promised to bring privacy protection to ten additional countries in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. To everyone's surprise, Microsoft today sent out an email to Microsoft 365 subscribers notifying them that the Defender Privacy protection feature will be discontinued on February 28, 2025. Microsoft provided the following reason for discontinuing the VPN service: Microsoft highlighted that other Defender features, like device protection and identity theft and credit monitoring (US), will continue to be available as before. Microsoft Defender users on Windows, iOS, and macOS need not take any action because of this change. However, Defender users on Android should remove the VPN profile from their device using the steps below: Go to your phone’s Settings app. Search for ‘VPN’ in the settings. If you’ve onboarded to privacy protection, you should see a ‘Microsoft Defender’ VPN profile in the list of VPN profiles. Use the info icon to tap on it and remove it. While the discontinuation of the VPN feature may disappoint some users, Microsoft's stated commitment to improving other security aspects could ultimately benefit its customer base. 8. A couple of months ago, Microsoft raised the price of the Microsoft 365 subscription for consumers in Australia and New Zealand. To make up for that, the company brought Copilot and several AI-powered features to Office apps like Word, Excel, and others. Now, the change is spreading to other countries across the globe. This is the first price increase for Microsoft 365 Personal and Home subscriptions in the United States. Ever since the company launched then-Office 365 12 years ago, it has kept the price at $69.99/year (Personal) and $99.99/year (Home). Now, however, the price goes up by $3/mo, with the new prices being $99.99 and $129.99, respectively. If you are already a Microsoft 365 subscriber, nothing changes for you until your next monthly or yearly payment. Despite that, you can access new Copilot features right away. In addition, those who do not need new AI features and do not want to pay more can opt for the Personal Classic and Family Classic plans. These will allow keeping old prices but with no access to AI features. Microsoft promises to maintain those plans, but "certain new innovations" will only be available in the more expensive subscriptions. Also, the new classic plans are only available to existing customers for one year. In addition to features like document drafting in Word, data analysis in Excel, email summarization in Outlook, and presentation generation in PowerPoint, Microsoft 365 subscribers can access image generation in Microsoft Designer. However, all these features require AI credits, which will be allotted to every subscriber each month. Microsoft says the amount of credits "should be enough for most subscribers." If it is not, you can switch to Copilot Pro, which costs $20/month and does not have usage limits. Microsoft also promises not to use your document data to train its models. This reassurance comes after a report spread across the internet, falsely claiming that Microsoft siphons your document data to train its AI models. In addition, Microsoft will let you turn off Copilot with a few clicks, should you do that to comply with rules at your work or school. You can already access AI-powered features in Office apps if you are a Microsoft 365 subscriber, so just make sure you are using the latest version. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. 9. A few days ago, Microsoft fixed a Microsoft Account (MSA)-related bug wherein users with legitimate Office 2024 licenses would apparently be unable to install the software. You can find the details about the issue in this article here. Besides that, the company also said that it was investigating another Microsoft 365-related bug wherein Office apps like Word, among others, would show a deactivation message that said: "Your Microsoft 365 license will be deactivated soon.... most features of Word will be disabled. Ask your Admin to reactivate your license". At the time, Microsoft had provided a workaround and urged affected users to help them. It looks like the investigation has paid off as the tech giant has now closed the issue and as such the bug has been labelled as fixed. A patch that is supposed to fix the deactivation problem has been deployed on the server side. However, it still encourages affected users to get in touch with the engineering team that is working on such bugs. It writes: You can find the updated status report of the bug in this article here on Microsoft's website. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. 10. Microsoft has confirmed that it is investigating an issue on Office apps like Word, Excel, Outlook, and others wherein a user may come across a "Product Deactivated" error in Microsoft 365 Office apps. For example, in Word, a cautionary banner would pop up that says, "Your Microsoft 365 license will be deactivated soon," and this is followed by "... most features of Word will be disabled. Ask your Admin to reactive your license". Microsoft has explained what's causing it and has also provided a workaround for the issue. It writes: Microsoft says that its engineering team is looking into it but also adds how users can help. It writes: You can find the support article here on Microsoft's website. 11. Microsoft is investigating a known issue triggering "Product Deactivated" errors for customers using Microsoft 365 Office apps. According to online user reports on Reddit and Microsoft's own community website, affected users randomly received these "Product Deactivated" errors in Office apps, prompting confusion and disruptions. As Redmond explained in a support document published on Thursday, these problems stem from licensing changes initiated by administrators. More precisely, the known issue arises when moving users between licensing groups (including Azure Active Directory groups or synced on-premises security groups) or switching user subscriptions, such as changing from an Office 365 E3 license to a Microsoft 365 E3 license. It can also be triggered when admins remove and re-add users to license groups, adjust license or service plan settings, or toggle the "Latest version of Desktop Apps" service plan under the Microsoft 365 subscription. To address this deactivation issue, customers can click the "Reactivate" button on the error banner and sign in when prompted. Alternatively, they can sign out of all Microsoft 365 apps, close them, and restart them before signing back in. If the issue persists, users are advised to contact their administrators to check if the Microsoft 365 subscription has expired. Admins can check subscription details under the Microsoft 365 subscription management portal. Microsoft 365 "Product Deactivated" warning (bohlsbbt) For further troubleshooting, Microsoft advises users with open support cases to provide diagnostic data to its engineers, collected using the Office Licensing Diagnostic Tool, which can help find the root cause of licensing-related issues. Affected users are also prompted to provide support engineers with the logs stored in the %temp%/diagnostics directory. While Microsoft has yet to share a timeline for a fix, its engineering team is actively investigating this known issue. The company encourages affected users and administrators to monitor its support channels for updates. Last month, Microsoft also shared a temporary fix for a known issue affecting Microsoft 365 customers that causes classic Outlook to hang or freeze when copying text. In September, the company fixed another bug that crashed Microsoft 365 apps (i.e., Outlook, Word, Excel, OneNote) when typing or spell-checking a text. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. 12. Microsoft has announced that it plans a massive UI (user interface) overhaul for Microsoft 365 (M365) and Copilot in January 2025. The company informed about the changes on its Microsoft 365 Message Center portal. Microsoft says the UI update is being done to better "support future AI-first experiences." First, we have the Microsoft 365 app UI updates, in which the tech giant has highlighted the list of changes it is making to the application. You can read them below to get a rough mental image of the new app: Following that, Microsoft has also outlined all the changes it is making to Copilot. For example, the app name changes from "Microsoft 365" to "Microsoft 365 Copilot". The new icon, which debuted at Ignite 2024, is also being introduced: Updates Today Mid-January 2025 Product Name Microsoft Copilot (for users with Entra Account) Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat Product URL Microsoft.com/copilot M365Copilot.com App Name Microsoft 365 Microsoft 365 Copilot App Icon Microsoft 365 Microsoft 365 Copilot Microsoft expects the changes to roll out in mid-January next year. The above changes were published under M365 Message Center message IDs MC958905 and MC958903, respectively. Please note that a Microsoft 365 Copilot already exists, which is an AI assistant meant to improve people's productivity when using Office apps. Aside from these, Microsoft also detailed the four new sections the Copilot page on the M365 Admin Center will have. These four sections, Overview, Health, Discover, and Settings, will help users understand, identify and track various aspects of the feature: The above update was published under M365 Message Center ID 472918. 13. Microsoft 365 currently offers two consumer subscription options: Microsoft 365 Family and Microsoft 365 Personal. Microsoft 365 Family extends subscription benefits to up to six people, while Microsoft 365 Personal is limited to a single user. Previously, Microsoft introduced premium AI features for consumers through the Copilot Pro plan and for enterprise and business users through the Microsoft 365 Copilot plan. Now, Microsoft is testing a new Microsoft 365 consumer plan that includes AI features at a higher subscription cost. This plan is currently being tested in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand. In Australia, the annual cost of the new Microsoft 365 Family with AI subscription will be $AU179, compared to $AU139 for the plan without AI features. The issue is that Microsoft is migrating all existing Microsoft 365 plan users to this new, more expensive plan. Although the updated price will take effect during their next renewal, this change may annoy those who don't need or want AI features. Microsoft still offers an AI-free Microsoft 365 plan at the original price, but users must cancel their current subscription and purchase the cheaper option separately. This updated plan provides Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers with 60 AI credits per month, usable across various applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Forms, OneNote, Designer, Notepad, Photos, and Paint. Each specific request for a Copilot or equivalent AI service action, such as generating text, a table, or an image, will consume one credit. However, the AI benefits are exclusive to the subscription owner and cannot be shared with other Microsoft 365 Family members. Other family members can purchase a Copilot Pro subscription individually to access AI features. Microsoft has stated that unused AI credits do not carry over to the next month. These credits reset on the first of each month, regardless of usage. If 60 AI credits are insufficient, consumers can purchase a dedicated Copilot Pro plan for more extensive access to AI features in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Forms, Designer, Notepad, Photos, and Paint. While currently being tested in select markets, this plan may expand to other regions, including Europe and the US, in the future. Microsoft's statement to ZDNet regarding this new Microsoft 365 consumer plan is: "The company has rolled out changes in six markets to listen, learn, and improve. We don't have anything more to share today." This move by Microsoft to bundle AI features into a more expensive plan has raised concerns about potential price increases for all users. While the company claims it is listening to feedback, it remains to be seen how this new plan will be received by consumers globally. via: ZDNet Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. 14. Welcome again to our weekly look back at the Microsoft 365 Roadmap website as we check out some new entries. This week there are some new features on the site that it says will be added to the Outlook email client. We have already reported on some upcoming features this past week like Outlook themes generated by AI via Copilot, and that a previously announced offline email sync feature would become available by the end of December in preview. This week on the roadmap site, Microsoft stated more advanced mail merge features are coming to the new Outlook Windows app as well as on the web in April 2025. Outlook for Windows and the web will add another new feature in December which will let users "manually insert a signature into a calendar event" as they currently can in the "classic" Outlook Windows app. Also in December, the iOS and Android mobile Outlook apps will finally allow those versions to sync up the order of their folders so they are the same as the order on the other Outlook apps that they use. Microsoft Teams will also get some improvements in December for admins across all of its platforms: In November, the desktop and Mac versions of Teams will get some Copilot AI bot chat improvements: Teams for the desktop and Mac platforms will also get some time clock improvements in November that will include a 'more comprehensive and detailed view of your scheduling data." 15. It's time once again for another look back at the past week's new entries that have been added to the Microsoft 365 Roadmap website. As always, these new listings can, and sometimes do, change their release dates so keep that in mind. As usual, some of the most interesting new entries on the Roadmap site are for users of Microsoft Teams. One of the entries says that Teams users on the desktop and Mac platforms will get some improvements in November in terms of searching for people: The desktop version of Teams will get another new feature in November designed to help users learn how to say the names of others. This feature will also be added to Outlook at some point. On the desktop and Mac platforms in November, Teams will get some extra security features: In January 2025, all Teams platforms will get another security-related feature for meeting organizers: The roadmap also had some new entries for Outlook users. In November, the Outlook mobile apps will get two new new features. One will help with receipts in emails: The other new mobile Outlook feature is for Copilot Business Chat users: That's it for this past week on the Microsoft 365 Roadmap updates. 16. We missed a week of updates to the Microsoft 365 Roadmap website last weekend. The reason was that your humble author of this feature was located in the middle of Hurricane Helene when it hit in late September. Things are slowly getting back to normal, so let's look at the updates on the site from the past seven days. The roadmap says Microsoft Teams will be adding some new features for chatting in Town Hall live events in November for the desktop, iOS and Android: In December, Teams for the desktop and Mac will include some improvements for Microsoft List links: Also, in December, Teams for all supported platforms will get some new moderator features: For people who use the new Outlook for Windows, Microsoft will be adding some people module improvements sometime in February 2025: Outlook for Windows and the web will also add four new themes sometime in November as well. Finally, the Edge web browser will get some new settings improvements in December: That's it for our weekly look at the Microsoft 365 Roadmap updates. 17. The Microsoft 365 Roadmap website for the past seven days added a number of upcoming features. We've already talked about one of them: OneDrive will get its own Copilot AI assistant in May. However, the Roadmap site included many more additions as well. Let's take a look at just some of them right now. Microsoft Teams: Separate chat for Teams town hall presenters and more This was an especially busy Roadmap update for various versions of Teams. One of them that will be added to Teams on the desktop and Mac platforms in March involves a new Town Hall feature. In April, Microsoft Teams Rooms on Windows will get an additional language feature: The Teams mobile apps got some attention on the Roadmap this week. In March, Parents who use Teams for Education on iOS and Android will be able to connect to the School Connection feature via a link provided by their children's school. Android Teams users will be able to record their screen and share it on a Teams channel or with other users in March. Also, during that month, Teams Rooms admins will be able to add a requirement for Android users to access a meeting ID and passcode to join a meeting. In June, admins will be able to send Android Teams Room users custom backgrounds, like the company's logo and brand for the main Teams room display, the extended room display, and its touch console. Microsoft Outlook - Attachments drag and drop download support The new Outlook for Windows app will get a new email attachments feature in March. That's a quick look at some of the Microsoft 365 Roadmap additions in the last week. We will be back in seven days for another quick rundown of the new additions. Source
  18. The Microsoft 365 Roadmap site is getting busier into the new year. The site has added more upcoming features that will be added to apps like Outlook, Teams, and more. Here's a quick look at what was added during the last seven days: Outlook - New support for making and sending newsletters and more The new Outlook for Windows and its web version will continue to add new features in 2024. The Microsoft 365 Roadmap states that later this year, both versions will get support for making newsletters. The listing states that "Newsletters in Outlook enable customers to create, distribute, and track success for their internal email newsletters." It will be offered as a public preview in April, and the plan is to make newsletters generally available in the new Outlook sometime in July. In March 2024, the new Outlook for Windows will add support for some more file types: The Mac Outlook app will get some improvements in March as well. Microsoft Teams - View OneDrive transcripts and more As usual for the Microsoft 365 Roadmap, there are lots of new additions for upcoming Teams features. One that's coming in March for all Teams platforms will center on transcripts stored in OneDrive. Teams for the Desktop and the Web will get a new feature in March to improve Virtual Appointments: The Teams Android app is scheduled to get several new features in April.
