  1. Google is finally bringing Material Design 3 to Gmail for iPhone. The company announced that the new Gmail interface will be available to all Workspace users and those with personal Google accounts, starting this week. Material Design 3 (also known as Material You) was launched back in 2021 alongside the Android 12 update. The design language focuses on more animations and visual customizations at the entry level, allowing users to change line thickness, size of UI elements, and more. Google gradually updated Gmail's web version and other apps with the new design language, but the iPhone's turn came after almost four years. Last year, it added a new Material You-based dark theme to the web version of Google Calendar. Another Gmail feature that has been available on Android for a year is now coming to iPhone. Google Workspace customers and users with personal accounts can create and modify birthday events in the Gmail app on iOS. However, what could be a Google announcement without the mention of artificial intelligence? The Gemini side panel in Gmail for Android and iOS is being updated with image generation capabilities. The feature is already available on the web; users can save, copy, or insert the AI-generated image into a compose draft. Google said that image generation is rolling out to select Workspace tiers, including Business Starter/Standard/Plus, Enterprise Starter/Standard/Plus, Google One AI Premium, and those with Gemini add-ons. The search giant is rolling out draggable dividers for Gmail and Google Chat users on Android devices with large screens. Users can pick between a one-pane or two-pane layout and control the width of each pane when in two-pane mode. Apart from that, a new update is coming to Google's video editor Vids, allowing users to control the height of the timeline to view more objects when working on timing for individual scenes. These new features add to the list of Workspace updates Google pushed this week, including high-quality templates for Google Slides and data classification labels for Gmail. 2. A couple of weeks ago, Google introduced a new feature in the Gmail Android app, that allows users to call their Google Meet contacts directly from the email client. Today, the popular mail service has announced another useful option for the mobile app, improved search filters. Here's how the Gmail Android app works currently. You tap on the search bar, and type the keyword and the app displays the relevant results. It also highlights the words that you searched for. It's not bad per se, as it gets the job done. However, if you compare it with its web mail equivalent, yes it is too basic. That is precisely what Google is aiming to change, by bringing the search filters from the web UI to the mobile app. When you perform a search inside the app, you will see a set of new options below the search bar. The screenshot shows 4 options: Sender, recipient, date, and attachment. If the web mail interface is anything to go by, the search filters in the mobile app should also have an unread mail button, and hopefully an advanced search option. Image courtesy: Google The announcement says that these search filters are rich drop-down lists, meaning once you tap them you will be able to access more options. E.g. You can enter the contact's name or email address, specify the timeframe to search in to filter the results. The app will also display a list of suggested senders, and offer a way to find mails from multiple senders. So you can tap on an option to specify the sender, recipient, date, or the attachment button (to check if the mail has one), and the Gmail Android app will narrow down the results to find a match based on the criteria that you set. Thankfully, this feature isn't exclusive to Business users or premium customers, all Gmail users will get the additional filters. Now, as to when the filters will be available, Google says it has already begun rolling out the feature to users, and that it will be available for all users by the end of October. The article on the Google's Workspaces blog indicates that the app will not have a setting to toggle the search filters, or customize them. On a side note, Google has rolled out the Material You design for the Gmail app. It adds a Meet tab at the bottom of the app's interface, if you are not a fan of it, you may disable the bottom bar. To do so, access the Gmail app's menu and tap on the Settings button. Select the account settings that you would like to manage. Scroll down till you see the Meet section, and toggle the box next to "Show the Meet tab for video calling". The app's interface will flash briefly as it refreshes, and gets rid of the tab bar. 3. Google is all set to update the Gmail app with the ability to directly call someone who also has the Gmail app. The update is part of an even larger update to Workspace that Google announced today. Google says that the feature will enable spontaneous connections with colleagues that you otherwise would make by casually bumping in the hallway or a break room, back in the pre-pandemic days. Google Meet calling is a seamless experience of initiating a video or audio call between one or more participants, complementing more structured, scheduled video meetings. Our intention is to bring Meet calling to all the natural endpoints in Workspace where you’d initiate an ad-hoc call including chats, people cards, and spaces, but this will come first to one-to-one chats within the Gmail mobile app. Once the feature is rolled out, users will be able to call their Workspace colleagues directly from the Gmail app. Doing this will ring their colleague's device, presuming that they already have the Gmail app installed. It might not seem quite the same as a spontaneous hallway conversation, but it is definitely a great way of learning about topics that might not come up in structured meetings. Google also added a bunch of other updates in Workspace. It introduced "Spaces" which is an expanded version of Rooms. Instead of starting an email chain or scheduling a meeting, teams can come together and collaborate in Spaces to move projects and talk about topics. Google is also streamlining the user interface of Gmail for easy access of inbox, chats, spaces and meetings, all from a single location. The company also unveiled two new all-in-one video conferencing devices. The One Desk 27 is a 27-inch device that is perfect for small shared spaces while the One Board 65 is a 65-inch 4K device that turns any room or space into a video collaboration hub. With all these updates, Google is turning Gmail into a complete tool for collaboration, similar to what Microsoft has been doing with Outlook all these years. However, this makes dedicated apps like Google Meet seem obsolete. Whichever might be the case, Google has been putting a lot of work into Gmail in recent years which is great news for both companies and consumers.
