  1. The Fedora Project has just announced that Fedora 40, which was released on April 23, 2024, has now reached end of life. This means that from today, it will not be receiving any new updates or support. Every day you decide to stay on this version, your system will become more and more vulnerable to attacks, so be sure to upgrade. As a little bit of background, Fedora retires a release one month after the following second release. So, in the case of Fedora 40, it has been retired a month after the release of Fedora 42. You can’t assume a certain Fedora version will be retired in 13 months, because sometimes, Fedora releases get delayed. Commenting on the end of life, Samyak Jain from Fedora said: If you are using Fedora Workstation, to upgrade all you have to do is open GNOME Software then go to the Updates tab. Here you should see an option to upgrade to a newer version of Fedora. If you use other editions of Fedora, then the upgrade instruction might be slightly different and you should consult these instructions. If you’re on Fedora 40 still, do not delay upgrading. 2. Earlier today, news emerged about Microsoft killing Skype. Insider the app's code, users discovered a message stating that the platform will be retired in a couple of months. Now, just several hours later, we have an official confirmation from Microsoft: Skype is dead. Microsoft published a blog post on the official website where it acknowledged the rumors: Although the writing has been on the wall for quite a while, it is still sad to see Skype going away. For many years, it was the go-to service for voice and video calls and instant messages. However, Microsoft failed to keep Skype up with the times. Despite several attempts to make Skype cool and hip, the platform kept declining, and it was unable to compete with Zoom, FaceTime, Google Meet, and other, more popular services. Now, Microsoft recommends switching from Skype to Teams, which offers the same features plus a lot more. In a few days, Teams will receive an update to let Skype users sign in with their profiles and transfer their chats, contacts, and other data. Also, during the transition period, Microsoft will let Skype and Teams users talk to each other in messages and calls. If you do not want to move to Teams, you can export your Skype data, but make sure to do so before May 5, 2025. Paid users can continue using paid features beyond May 5, 2025, until the end of their current period. The Skype Dial Pad will be available in the Skype web portal and Microsoft Teams. You can read more about the upcoming end of Skype here. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. Thank you for appreciating my time and effort posting news every day for many years. 3. The inevitable is about to happen. Although not officially announced, buried inside the latest preview update for Windows is a message that confirms Skype's expiry date. What's the alternative? Microsoft encourages everyone to shift to Teams. According to a report by XDA, the hidden message reads, "Starting in May, Skype will no longer be available. Continue your calls and chats in Teams." Following this message, another line mentions that a certain number "of your friends have already moved to Teams free." The last line could be based on users' Skype contact lists. As of now, the official warning or note isn't appearing for Skype users, but it should start soon. Skype debuted back in 2003 and was acquired by Microsoft in 2011 for $8.5 billion. However, Skype didn't prove to be an instant hit for Microsoft, as its integration with Windows 10, Windows Phone, and even Xbox failed to deliver the expected impact. Over the years, Microsoft has pushed multiple updates for Skype, but the product failed to become a viable option during the pandemic—a time when Zoom capitalized on the opportunity. Microsoft did build Teams using Skype as its foundation, though the experience between the two platforms remained distinct. Microsoft made several attempts to revive Skype with new features such as Skype Clips, which allows users to capture video messages and send them to each other without needing to place a call. In 2024, it also integrated Copilot and removed ads across all platforms. Yet, despite these efforts, Skype failed to become the go-to video calling or messaging app. Recognizing Skype's decline, Microsoft ended the Skype Credits feature, which allowed users to make international calls. Instead, Microsoft introduced a subscription service for free Skype calls. And now, it is time for Skype to bid adieu. While Microsoft has yet to confirm this information officially, it is apparent that Skype's days are numbered. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. 4. Twilio has finally killed off its Authy for Desktop application, forcibly logging users out of the desktop application. In January, Twilio announced that the Authy desktop apps for Windows, macOS, and Linux would reach the end of life on March 19, 2024, and will ultimately be discontinued in August 2024. While the desktop apps continued to work past March, when opened, they showed an alert warning that the program had reached end of life and that users should switch to the mobile versions immediately. Authy for desktop warnings Source: BleepingComputer This ended about thirteen days ago when Twilio forcibly logged all desktop devices out of their Authy accounts and no longer allowed them to log back in with their phone numbers. Authy for desktop users forcibly logged out Source: BleepingComputer Those who have continued to use Authy for Desktop, even after all the warnings, have found that their 2FA accounts are gone unless they had previously synced them with a mobile device. However, those who synced their desktop apps with the mobile versions have discovered that some of their tokens did not correctly synchronize, making their associate accounts inaccessible. In June, threat actors found an unsecured Authy API that could be used to verify if a phone number was associated with a valid account. The threat actors fed millions of phone numbers into the API, allowing them to build profiles of 33 million phone numbers on Authy, which were then leaked on a hacking forum. Twilio fixed the bug by securing the API and releasing an updated mobile app version. Some believe that Authy desktop users cannot log in because the desktop app has not been updated with the new fix for the API. However, in June, Authy released version 3.0, stating it would be the final desktop release, so we will unlikely see another one. Update 8/1/24: Twilio told BleepingComputer that users were logged out as part of the planned end-of-life plans for Authy desktop apps as described here. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post.
