  1. People have been opting for the dark mode across their operating systems and on websites for years now. It’s kind of cultish, really, with its die-hard advocates. I kind of like dark mode, but one thing that I found problematic is that many sites use bright colors. So, while you might be enjoying your dark mode tranquility, the next second, you open a website and get blinded by all the bright colors. Thankfully, Google Chrome has a hidden option to force all websites you visit to use dark mode. It can cause a few visibility issues, but, for the most part, it works very well. All you have to do is enable a Chrome flag and restart your browser. Some of you will have used the Dark Reader extension, which is great but doesn’t work on Chrome for Android because Google doesn’t allow extensions there (Edge for mobile supports certain extensions). With the flag technique, however, you can enable dark mode on all the mobile websites you visit in Chrome for Android, too. To get started, go to the URL bar in Chrome on your desktop or mobile device, type chrome://flags/, and hit enter. Next, in the Search flags field, type ‘dark,’ and you will see Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents – this should be available on Windows, Mac, Linux, ChromeOS, and Android, but not iOS. Click the associated drop down that says Default and choose Enabled, you will then be prompted to restart your browser. Upon restart, go to a website that doesn’t have a dark mode. If it’s enabled properly, this website should have a dark theme. As stated at the beginning of the guide, this is a bit of a hack on Google’s side, so not all websites will adjust perfectly. For most websites, though, you shouldn’t have any issues. If you find deal-breaking changes, you can go back to the Chrome flags and change the drop-down back to Default to undo the change or select another variant of the flag. 2. There is no denying that dark mode support in Windows 10 and 11 is mediocre at best. Besides having a lot of surface without dark mode support at all, both Windows 10 and 11 cannot even switch modes automatically or on schedule. This strange omission is what Auto Dark Mode fixes, and with the latest update, the app is now even better. Auto Dark Mode lets you automate theme switching based on custom hours or sunset/sunrise. You can also select separate wallpapers or entire themes for each mode, apply filters, and customize other features. Version 10.4.2.29, the latest Auto Dark Mode release, delivers a welcome change, especially for those with Copilot+ PCs: it is now fully ARM-native, which means better energy efficiency, faster performance, and a more responsive UI. Another change in version 10.4.2.29 is the feature called "Try to fix the theme." It sits in the tray menu and allows you to resolve random theme-switching bugs, such as the wrong taskbar color. The developer says this new addition is a "press & pray" method. There are also improvements to slideshows in shuffle mode, more image type support (JPEG XR for HDR wallpapers in Windows 11 version 24H2), better compatibility with color filters, and more. Here is the complete changelog: You can download Windows Auto Dark Mode from the Microsoft Store or GitHub. It is one of our favorite Windows apps, which we covered in several "Top 10 apps" lists, like here, here, and here. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. 3. Here is some great news for those who work late hours in Excel. Microsoft's spreadsheet processor has finally adopted a proper dark mode that spans across the entire window, turning to the dark side not only the ribbon but all the cells in your sheet. According to the company, this change has been a highly-requested feature on the feedback portal, and it is finally bringing it to users. In the announcement post, Microsoft said there are several benefits to the new dark mode in Excel. In addition to reduced eye strain in low-light conditions, you can enjoy better energy efficiency on devices with OLED displays, thanks to a pitch-black cell background. Customers can also enjoy improved accessibility and a visually appealing, consistent look of documents. If you still prefer having white sheets, Microsoft allows you to keep them that way. You can always toggle between modes on the View tab by pressing the "Switch Modes" button on the ribbon: As of right now, the updated dark mode is rolling out to Microsoft 365 Insiders in the Beta Channel with version 2502 and build number 18508.2000 or later. Excel is not the only app with a dark mode that affects every part of the user interface. Some time ago, Word received the same treatment, allowing you to work with documents with dark backgrounds when in dark mode. It automatically switches back to light mode when the theme changes or when you print your document. You can read more about the latest Excel updates in the announcement post on the Tech Community website. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. 4. You can still early find unfinished and broken areas of the Windows UI when dark mode is enabled to this very day. In summer 2016, Microsoft released its first major feature update for Windows 10 which introduced a brand-new dark theme toggle that allowed users to switch apps between light and dark themes system wide. It was a nice addition, even if at the time, many apps and shell-level interfaces didn’t support it out of the gate. This changed over time, and today, many, if not most apps on Windows support switching between light and dark themes based on the built-in Windows toggle. However, the same can’t be said for the Windows UI itself, which has seen very little progress since the dark mode toggle was introduced. When Windows 10 debuted in 2015, it did so with a mishmash of light and dark UI elements. The Taskbar, Start Menu, and Action Center were all dark, but the File Explorer and context menus were light. In 2016, Microsoft officially added a dark mode toggle, which added dark mode to the File Explorer and context menus. However, this work was very much surface-level. Although the File Explorer and context menus finally had dark mode, it was very easy to encounter an area of the UI that didn’t support it. Copy dialogs, file properties, Run commands, the Registry Editor, Control Panel applets, and many more areas of Windows did not support dark mode. It's been almost 10 years since, and these areas of the Windows OS STILL don’t support dark mode. Windows 11 to this day will still flashbang you whenever you copy a large file or open the properties dialog. This wouldn’t be a problem if these areas of the system were rare to come across, but these are areas of the OS that most users see all the time, on a daily basis! It's not just incomplete, either. In some places, dark mode is outright broken. I mean, what the heck is this? This is an interface you can access directly from the Start menu on the latest version of Windows 11. (Image credit: Windows Central) What’s frustrating is that I know that Microsoft began working on finishing dark during the development of Windows 11 in 2020/2021. Internal builds of the OS included in-progress work to add dark mode to these older Windows interfaces such as file properties and copy dialogs, but for whatever reason this work was never completed. When you take a look at macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and Android, these platforms include a consistent and complete system wide dark mode. When dark mode is enabled, it is rare to come across an area of the system UI that isn’t themed correctly. On Windows 11, it’s a daily occurrence, and Microsoft doesn’t seem to care. Adding insult to injury, in 2018 Microsoft added a dedicated light them to Windows 10 and made it the default so that the shell didn’t look so incomplete. I don’t know why Microsoft won’t put the resources in to complete dark mode. It looks so unprofessional and frankly kills my productivity whenever I’m working at night and a light interface of some kind pops up and burns my retinas. To be clear, this is an issue that solely relies with Microsoft. Pretty much all of the third-party apps I use on Windows support dark mode these days, including Telegram, Slack, WhatsApp, and Office. It’s literally just Windows that still doesn’t fully support its own dark mode, and I cannot stress how frustrated this makes me. I was hoping that with a change of guard in the Windows leadership department, we’d see the Windows team refocus on polishing the Windows interface and completing things like dark mode. Sadly, that doesn’t look like it’s happening anytime soon. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. 5. Microsoft began working on dark mode or dark theme for Edge somewhere around 2018-19. The company began testing some of the elements in June 2019 in the Canary preview channel, and about four months later, the company rolled out a feature that would allow users to enable dark mode on websites they would visit. Fast forward a few years to 2022, an Edge Dev channel update made the transition from darker themes to lighter themes and vice versa much smoother when toggled between the two. And later on in that same year, Microsoft added dark theme to window mode context menus. Microsoft is moving on from there as the company will soon be adding more darker Dark theme option to Edge. Browser enthusiast and leakster, Leopeva64 on Twitter, has revealed that the Redmond giant is now testing a new Dark theme on the Canary channel. "In Edge Canary Microsoft is testing a full black background for the tab strip, toolbar, favorites bar, vertical tabs and sidebar" writes Leopeva. The leaker has also provided screenshots of the new theme. The Dev and the Beta channels still possess the current Dark theme. The Canary screenshots are below while the Dev and Beta are on top: Perhaps Microsoft might offer both options simultaneously so users who prefer the darker tone can choose it, though this is entirely our speculation here, and the Edge development team could completely replace the current Dark theme with the upcoming darker one. In case you are wondering how to enable the current Dark theme in Edge, do the following: Go to Settings and more (Alt+F) Select Settings Select Appearance from the Settings list. Under Customize browser > Overall Appearance > Theme, use the drop-down list to select Dark. Do you like this new version of the current Dark theme in Edge? Or perhaps it's a bit too dark for your liking? Let us know below! Source: Leopeva64 (Twitter) Source
  6. Dark mode has gained significant popularity among users of digital devices due to its many benefits. Beyond the cool aesthetics, dark mode has been known to reduce eye strain, especially in low-light conditions, making it a helpful feature for many users. If you are a Google Chrome user, activating dark mode is straightforward and easy, with a tutorial readily available to guide you. Furthermore, an auto dark mode feature is also available that you can activate with ease. However, some users find that the native dark mode does not work with some websites, and thus turn to extensions for a more customized experience. Extensions are preferred by some users because they can help darken websites that the native dark mode may not cover, and it is easier to toggle them on and off as needed. To optimize your browsing experience, we have compiled a list of the best dark mode extensions for Chrome that you can try out. It is worth noting that the extensions recommended for Google Chrome may also work on Microsoft Edge, as Edge is based on the same Chromium architecture and supports Google Chrome extensions. Our team conducted a brief test on Edge and found that the extensions listed below seemed to function appropriately. Therefore, if you are an Edge user seeking to enhance your browsing experience with dark mode, these extensions may be worth considering. However, we recommend verifying compatibility before installation to ensure optimal performance. Dark Reader Dark Reader is a widely recognized and reliable dark mode extension that utilizes a simple colour inversion technique similar to that employed by many other extensions. Essentially, it flips the white colour scheme to a darker gray. The extension offers a contrast slider that enables users to adjust the shade of dark to their preference, with the option of selecting black if desired. Moreover, Dark Reader offers additional features such as Sepia and Grayscale options, and the capability to whitelist websites with their own native dark mode, thereby preventing the unwanted inversion back into white. While it may not be entirely flawless, Dark Reader is among the best options available for users seeking a more comfortable and customizable browsing experience. Midnight Lizard Midnight Lizard is undoubtedly one of the most versatile dark mode extensions available, offering extensive customization options for users seeking a personalized browsing experience. In contrast to other extensions that provide standard gray and black options, Midnight Lizard allows users to choose their preferred background colour and further customize the colour of links, text, and other page elements to suit their preferences. While the extension's user interface may be busier and more challenging to navigate than others, this should not significantly impact the user experience. While some users have reported issues with compatibility on certain websites, our testing yielded favorable results, and we experienced minimal issues. Overall, Midnight Lizard stands out as an excellent option for users who prioritize customization and personalization in their browsing experience. Dark Theme & Night Shift Mode Dark Theme & Night Shift Mode is an exceptional dark mode extension that we highly recommend for users seeking a tailored and easy-to-use browsing experience. The extension features user-friendly controls that allow for customization of the dark theme with a range of lighter or darker backgrounds. We particularly appreciate the scheduling feature and whitelist capability that turns the extension off on selected websites, ensuring compatibility with websites that have their own native dark mode. Additionally, our team conducted extensive testing and found the extension to be fully functional on every website, with minimal issues encountered. Therefore, based on our testing and analysis, we confidently recommend Dark Theme & Night Shift Mode as a top-tier extension for optimizing your browsing experience. Super Dark Mode Super Dark Mode is a highly dependable dark mode extension that provides a comprehensive range of customization options, including advanced features for users seeking a more tailored browsing experience. One noteworthy feature is its integration with existing dark modes on popular websites, eliminating the need to toggle the extension on and off constantly. For sites that the extension does not support, adding them to the whitelist is a quick and straightforward process. While some users may find it inconvenient that the extension icon acts as a simple on/off switch, requiring customization through the options menu, this should not detract from its reliability and usability. In our testing, Super Dark Mode performed exceptionally well and consistently delivered a high-quality browsing experience. Therefore, we confidently recommend Super Dark Mode as a robust and versatile extension for users seeking a reliable and customizable dark mode browsing experience. Night Eye Night Eye is a comprehensive extension that offers a range of features, including dark mode, blue light filtering, a dim feature, and an icon and image conversion capability. In addition to the standard AMOLED black mode and scheduling options, these additional features set Night Eye apart from other dark mode extensions. While this extension provides an excellent browsing experience, it is important to note that enabling all of its features may cause high CPU usage, especially on a browser that already uses significant resources. Despite this, our team found that Night Eye performed reliably on all the sites we tested, with a clean and intuitive user interface that makes customization straightforward. Overall, Night Eye is a great option for users looking for a full-featured extension that provides a customizable and personalized browsing experience. A dark mode extension for every purpose dark mode extensions offer users a highly customizable and personalized browsing experience, allowing them to reduce eye strain and improve their viewing comfort in low-light conditions. While there are numerous dark mode extensions available for Google Chrome, our analysis and testing have identified the five best options: Dark Reader, Dark Theme & Night Shift Mode, Midnight Lizard, Night Eye, and Super Dark Mode. These extensions vary in terms of their features, usability, and customization options, but each offers a reliable and high-quality dark mode experience that can enhance your browsing experience. Ultimately, the choice of extension will depend on your preferences and needs, but any of the recommended options would be an excellent choice to help you browse the web in comfort and style. 7. Say goodbye to the blinding-white Google.com start page and search results. Dark mode! It's finally here. First image of article image gallery. Please visit the source link to see all images. It's finally happening: Google.com is getting a dark mode. What was once the domain of janky site-theming browser extensions can now be enabled right from the Google home page. An official post from the support forums says that dark mode in desktop Google Search is rolling out starting today and will reach every user "over the next few weeks." Whether or not you have dark mode right now depends on your Google account. I have the new mode on two of my four Google accounts (don't ask), including both a personal account and a paid Google Workspace account. To enable the feature, head to the Google.com settings—on the home page, this page is linked in the bottom left, and on a search results page, it's under the gear button in the top right. On the settings page—if dark mode has made it to your account—you'll see a new "Appearance" section where you can turn on the style. After turning on dark mode, you'll get a quick theme switcher in the gear button, allowing you to easily jump between dark and light modes. The dark setting seems to work on all the Google.com sections, like news, shopping, books, images, etc. If you don't have an "Appearance" section in the settings, you don't have dark mode yet. Keep waiting! Google.com dark mode is rolling out to everyone (To view the article's image gallery, please visit the above link)
  8. Windows 11 brings a redesigned user interface and an overhaul to the system sounds, including different sounds for Light Mode and Dark Mode. When developing Windows 11, the Microsoft audio team developed new system sounds designed to provide a calm experience while still being able to notify you of something as necessary. "Windows 10 sounds were sharp, literally created with sharp wave lengths. In Windows 11, we have focused on making the technology calm. In order to do this, we needed to reevaluate our sound scape to also be calm," Microsoft told BleepingComputer in a statement. "The new sounds have a much rounder wavelength, making them softer so that they can still alert/notify you, but without being overwhelming." "Just like we rounded UI visually, we rounded our sound scape as well to soften the overall feel of the experience." Unlike all previous versions of Windows, Microsoft also created different versions of the system sounds for Windows 11, depending on whether you are in Light Mode or Dark Mode. For Light Mode users, the sounds are meant to be brighter and louder, while in Dark Mode, the sounds will be quieter and more subdued with a slight echo. "We introduced light and dark sound options so that people who may have low visibility or no vision can still experience light and dark themes audibly. Themed sounds improve productivity by matching your working style through your theme. Dark Sounds help you stay in focus while Light Sounds ensure you’re always engaged" - Microsoft spokesperson. The Light Mode sounds are still stored under the C:\Windows\Media folder with the new Dark Mode sounds stored under C:\Windows\Media\dm. Compare the Windows 11 Light and Dark mode sounds With Windows 11, Microsoft created ten new system sounds that will be played while in Dark Mode. These ten sounds, and their Light Mode counterparts, are displayed below to compare their differences easily. The Light Mode sound will be in audio control with a white background, while the Dark Mode sound will be the dark background. We have also labeled each sound based on default assignment under the 'Program Events' section in the Windows 11 Sound properties screen. 9. New Windows 11 concept shows what Task Manger with dark mode could look like Source: Jakub Last month, Microsoft finally unveiled the much-anticipated Windows 11 update. The new update comes with an updated UI, performance, and productivity improvements. Microsoft has also released the minimum system requirements for Windows 11 which includes Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 among other things, but the latter can be bypassed for now. One of the key highlights of Windows 11 is the new rounded UI that is pleasing to the eye. Along with the new UI, Microsoft is also embracing the dark side with an improved system-wide dark mode. Unfortunately, the company has again skipped Task Manager for some reasons as the app still lacks support for dark mode. However, Twitter user Jakub has given us a look at what Task Manger could look like if Microsoft ever decides to add support for dark mode. The concept shows off Task Manager wrapped in dark background that blends in well with the wallpaper and compliments the text, which uses the new Segoe UI Variable Display font. The usage charts, on the other hand, may look familiar to anyone who has played around with Linux distros. Overall, the design looks elegant as well as gives users the ability to switch to dark mode on Task Manager. We do hope that Microsoft adopts the design or a variation of the design for Windows 11. For more information on Windows 11, you can check out our article on minimum system requirements as well as the list of CPUs that support Windows 11. Apart from the general requirements, Microsoft has also listed out specific feature requirements for Windows 11 including webcams, Bluetooth and Precision Touchpad on all upcoming laptops. Last month, Microsoft also updated the PC Health Check app to show why a device is not ineligible to receive the Windows 11 update. However, the company will allow some manufacturers to bypass the TPM 2.0 requirement and it is also allowing Windows Insiders with unsupported hardware to test Windows 11 Insider Builds. Several manufacturers have published a list of hardware that will be compatible with Windows 11. If you are still out of the loop, then you can check out hands-on video. If you want to get in-depth information about Windows 11 then you can check out our article covering all the new features and changes. 10. Windows 11 will reportedly ship in Dark Mode by default Windows 11 is designed to be a calmer and more pleasant operating system but Microsoft may also be aiming for a more moody look. Windows insider Paul Thurrott is claiming that Microsoft plans to ship the OS in Dark Mode by default. The operating system of course does have a very pleasant dark theme, as can be seen below, but so far the Insider builds have defaulted to the more iPad-like Light Theme. There is some concern that Dark Mode may not look good on every monitor, and darker screens can be less legible for older eyes. Windows 11 will reportedly ship in Dark Mode by default
  11. Microsoft rolls out dark mode for the unified Office app on Android Microsoft has begun rolling out dark mode for the unified Office app on Android. The theming option for the app was spotted earlier this year and is now being made available to all users, bringing to the app a feature that the Redmond firm says was “highly requested”. Interestingly, there is no word on whether the update with the theming option is heading to the other productivity apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The company has been offering the option of a dark mode on Outlook and OneDrive for Android users. However, the popular mode is yet to be introduced to other Office suite of apps on the platform, though they have been available on iOS for a while now. With the option now rolling out for the unified Office app, it might not be long before the firm rolls out the features for the individual offerings. Just like with Outlook, the app automatically switches to dark mode depending on the system preference. However, users can head into settings to force the app into light or dark themes, if required. What seems to still be missing is the ability to apply the theming option to the canvas on documents, which means that Word documents will still have a bright canvas. This feature is currently being tested for the desktop in the Office Insider builds and might show up soon for the mobile versions. Microsoft announced its plans to introduce dark mode to its Microsoft 365 suite of apps back in 2019. Since then, the firm has not only been rolling out the popular setting to mobile apps, but also to the web versions, such as for OneDrive on the web. 12. Windows Auto Dark Mode is one of those small ingenious apps that fix what Microsoft refuses to do on a system level for some reason. It automatically switches between dark and light modes depending on specific time or geolocation. Due to changes in the Windows 11 2022 Update, the app suffered from various issues and graphical glitches. Luckily, the latest update is here to fix that. Auto Dark Mode X 10.2.0 is now available for download from the app or its GitHub repository. According to developer notes, version 10.2.0 aims to fix Windows 11 2022 Update-related issues by rewriting the entire theme logic. There still might be some problems to resolve, but the overall experience should be much better. In addition, the latest release adds the option to postpone theme switching when the device is in use. Here is the full changelog: New Features: Postpone theme switch when your computer is in use! Improvements: Windows 11 22H2 compatibility by rewriting the entire theme logic Ability to set custom script timeout on a per-script basis. 13. Let the way-too-late nights researching each Beach Boys album in order commence. Dark mode, night mode, light-on-dark design, or whatever you want to call the version of computer content that doesn't feel blindingly bright at night, had something of a peak moment around 2019–2020. That's when Android and iOS designed a system-wide way to implement a darker theme, and signal to compatible apps to do the same. Many, many systems, apps, websites, and other digital tools soon followed. Except, most notably, Wikipedia. Despite being one of the sites most sympathetic to late-night mind wandering, Wikipedia had no official way to switch its iconic white pages into something more sleep and eyeball-friendly. Now, after great effort from its community, a dark mode (technically a dark "Color" setting) is available to most Wikipedia visitors on both desktop and mobile. On desktop, look for a sidebar on the right-hand side that has buttons for setting text size and width, and then "Color (beta)." If you don't see a sidebar, look for an eyeglasses-like icon in the upper-right corner near the search and account tools. On mobile, look for the three horizontal bars (aka hamburger button) in the upper-left corner of a page, choose Settings, then pick your Color. There is the standard Light you know, Dark, and Automatic, which takes its color cues from your system. Dark mode is in beta, though it looks pretty decent on most user-facing pages. Wikipedia More than a year ago, a dark mode handily won out as the most-requested feature in Wikipedia's Community Wishlist Survey for 2023. It might seem simple to flip the colors on a predominantly text-based website to their inverse opposites. But as noted in a discussion on the 2023 survey on Reddit, though, it's never quite so simple. Many of Wikipedia's inline styles have hard-coded colors. Browser extensions that turn Wikipedia dark tend to contain a huge number of manual overrides for those. As redditor gwern put it: Wikipedia's tracker for bugs and issues, Phabricator, shows a "Provide a dark / night mode skin or theme" ticket going back to June 22, 2010. Things really start picking up in early 2022, and the discussion goes lots of places, including accessibility, machine learning, and color-coded map keys. The broad task was marked as "Resolved" on July 12, though many subtasks remain. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. 14. After first launching on desktop devices, Google appears to be bringing its new darker dark mode to its Android search app, albeit with a few differences. Strangely, the new darker dark mode which is being tested on Google’s Android search app isn’t the same shade of black as the one currently being rolled out on desktops, however, it still looks great if you’re afraid of the blinding brightness of light mode. As spotted by 9to5Google, this change is most notably being applied to the background of Google’s Discover page, where the new dark mode uses an almost black colour value of #171717, a stark change from the lighter grey #202124 that we’re all used to. Similarly to the desktop darker dark mode which is steadily being rolled out, this feature should be a great benefit for those with OLED displays, since it should conserve the limited battery life of your mobile device while also making colours pop thanks to the added contrast. To access the new dark mode for yourself you’ll need to be in the latest 13.8 beta from the Google Play Store. Google’s darker dark mode is coming to Android
