Windows 11 gets a new taskbar button and a much-needed desktop fix in build 27858
Karlston posted a news in Software News
Microsoft took a break from shipping Canary builds to Windows Insiders due to various bugs and issues that needed to be addressed. Now, the company finally has a release-worthy build, and it is available for download. If you are a Windows Insider in the Canary Channel, you can download build 27858. While the update is not the biggest one, it brings some interesting changes to the desktop and the taskbar. On the desktop, Microsoft finally removed the colored backplate for packaged Windows apps like Snipping Tool or Calculator. Now, icons are bigger and easier to read. Just keep in mind that you will have to create new shortcuts to see the change in action. Next, Microsoft is adding a new taskbar button to make it easier to invoke the emoji panel. You will find it next to other tray icons. If you prefer launching the emoji panel using he old Win + Period shortcut, you can toggle off the new button by right-clicking it or visiting the taskbar settings. Other changes and fixes in today's release include improved accessibility for File Explorer, fixes for UI crashes when dragging a window, fixes for non-working Night Light, broken Wi-Fi connections in the previous builds, fixes for system crashes with the KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE code, and more. Known bugs in build 27858 include the following: [General] [IMPORTANT NOTE FOR COPILOT+ PCs] If you are joining the Canary Channel on a new Copilot+ PC from the Dev Channel, Release Preview Channel or retail, you will lose Windows Hello pin and biometrics to sign into your PC with error 0xd0000225 and error message “Something went wrong, and your PIN isn’t available”. You should be able to re-create your PIN by clicking “Set up my PIN”. [NEW] You may see an Administrative Templates error message when opening Group Policy Editor. If you click OK, you should be able to proceed as normal. [Input] [NEW] Pen input may be non-responsive on some PCs that support pen for inking. Microsoft releases new Snipping Tool update to make text extraction easier
Karlston posted a news in Software News
Back in 2023, Microsoft introduced a new feature in the Snipping Tool called Text Actions, which can detect text in captured screenshots. This feature allowed users to easily copy text from any image and use it for various purposes. Today, Microsoft announced a new update to the Snipping Tool app for Windows 11 Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels. This version 11.2503.27.0 update brings the popular Text Extractor feature to the Snipping Tool capture bar. This eliminates the extra step of taking a screenshot to copy the required text, as users can now directly copy text from any image that appears on the screen. To use this new capability, users can open the Snipping Tool app or use the Win + Shift + S keyboard shortcut and click the new “Text Extractor” button in the toolbar. Once the button is pressed, users can select the region they would like to scan for text and then manually select the text to copy. Users can also click the “Copy all text” button in the toolbar to copy all text within the selected region. The “More options” dropdown menu in the toolbar will have the following two options: “Remove line breaks” from copied text. Enable “Automatically copy text,” which dismisses the Snipping Tool sooner and automatically copies all text in the selected region directly to the clipboard. Last month, Microsoft added another neat feature to the Snipping Tool app. The new Draw & Hold experience allows users to easily create clean lines and shapes. To use this feature, users should select the pen tool and draw a line, arrow, rectangle, or oval over the screenshot. Holding the cursor or pen still for a moment before releasing the shape will convert the stroke into a well-formed shape. Users can then resize, move, or adjust it as needed. Microsoft begins turning off uBlock Origin and other extensions in Edge
Karlston posted a news in Security & Privacy News
If you use the uBlock Origin extension in Google Chrome or Edge, you should probably start looking for alternative browsers or extensions—either way. A few days ago, users noticed that Google had begun disabling uBlock Origin and other Manifest V2-based extensions as part of the migration to Manifest V3. Now, Microsoft Edge appears to be following suit. The latest Edge Canary version started disabling Manifest V2-based extensions with the following message: "This extension is no longer supported. Microsoft Edge recommends that you remove it." Although the browser turns off old extensions without asking, you can still make them work by clicking "Manage extension" and toggling it back (you will have to acknowledge another prompt). At this point, it is not entirely clear what is going on. Google started phasing out Manifest V2 extensions in June 2024, and it has a clear roadmap for the process. Microsoft's documentation, however, still says "TBD," so the exact dates are not known yet. This leads to some speculating about the situation being one of "unexpected changes" coming from Chromium. Either way, sooner or later, Microsoft will ditch MV2-based extensions, so get ready as we wait for Microsoft to shine some light on its plans. Another thing worth noting is that the change does not appear to be affecting Edge's stable release or Beta/Dev Channels. For now, only Canary versions disable uBlock Origin and other MV2 extensions, leaving users a way to toggle them back on. Also, the uBlock Origin is still available in the Edge Add-ons store, which recently received a big update. In August 2024, when Google started flagging uBlock Origin as unsupported, the extension's maker stepped in and recommended users switch to uBlock Origin Lite, a Manifest V3-based extension, and accept some of its limitations. Another option is to switch to Firefox. Mozilla recently announced its plans to keep Manifest V2 extensions working, including uBlock Origin, based on Mozilla Manifesto, which claims that "individuals must have the ability to shape the internet and their own experiences on it." Now, users can either switch to a browser that still supports MV2 extensions or move to MV3-based ad blockers. Of course, not all MV2 extensions have "more modern" versions, so for many, switching to Firefox or another browser with MV2 support will be the only option to keep old extensions working. Windows 11 will let you cut Copilot key from your life, no knife or screwdriver required
Karlston posted a news in Software News
Microsoft rolled out a new feature to Canary Channel Windows Insiders that lets you customize the Copilot key. What you need to know Windows 11 Build 27729 allows you to configure the Copilot key to launch other applications. That build is in testing among Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel. Apps need to be MSIX packaged and signed to be opened with the Copilot key due to security requirements. Windows 11 will soon support setting the Copilot key to open a different application. The change will be welcomed by many who view Copilot as either an unnecessary app or that prefer to bring up the tool with a different keyboard shortcut. The change is in testing in Windows 11 Build 27729, which is now available to Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel. If all this sounds familiar, it's because Microsoft started testing the option with Dev and Beta Channel Insiders last month. Now, the option is available to those in the Canary Channel as well. All Copilot+ PCs feature a Copilot key, as do many newer keyboards. At the moment, that key is not customizable, making it a waste to those who do not use Copilot. The Salesforce CEO is a likely candidate to remap the Copilot key to another app, since he said that "Copilot is just the new Microsoft Clippy. It doesn't work or deliver value." Assuming all goes well in testing, the ability to customize the Copilot key will make its way to everyone in the near future. When it does, swapping the Copilot key to open your app of choice will be possible through the Windows 11 Settings app. There are some limits on the apps that you can open with the Copilot key. Microsoft restricted the feature to MSIX packaged and signed apps to ensure customer security and privacy. While it doesn't affect the functionality of the Copilot key, it's fun to note that Microsoft did not invent a new key for Copilot. Instead, the teach giant programmed the Copilot key to use the key combination of Left Shift + Windows key + F23 to open Copilot. That combination of keys is unlikely to be bound to a different shortcut because very few computers have an F23 key. Windows 11 Build 27729: Changes and Improvements Settings We are adding the ability to configure the Copilot key. You can choose to have the Copilot key launch an app that is MSIX packaged and signed, thus indicating the app meets security and privacy requirements to keep customers safe. The key will continue to launch Copilot on devices that have the Copilot app installed until a customer selects a different experience. This setting can be found via Settings > Personalization > Text input. If the keyboard connected to your PC does not have a Copilot key, adjusting this setting will not do anything. We are planning further refinements to this experience in a future flight. Windows 11 Build 27729: Fixes General We fixed an underlying issue causing some games, including Microsoft Solitaire & Casual Games, to crash on launch after installing Build 27718+. Windowing Fixed an underlying issue which could cause the screen to go black for a few seconds for some people when using ALT + Tab. Other We fixed an issue causing BitLocker to not work correctly for a small number of Insiders in the last 2 flights. Source RIP Matrix | Farewell my friend Hope you enjoyed this news post. Microsoft confirms black screens and hangs on Windows 11 preview PCs with older Nvidia GPUs
Karlston posted a news in Software News
After a long month of waiting, Windows 11 Canary builds finally returned in October. However, in addition to adding some new features and fixes, the latest releases brought new known bugs and some pretty serious issues. Microsoft has just issued a notification that Windows Insiders with older Nvidia graphics cards will experience black screens, hangs, and other nastiness in Windows 11 build 27723. Here is what Microsoft added to the release notes for build 27723: Unfortunately, there are no workarounds at this moment. If your system is affected, the only way to get out of the loop is to roll back to the previous build. To do so, Microsoft recommends booting into Windows Recovery (WinRE) and uninstalling build 27723 using troubleshooting tools. Once back to the previous release, make sure to go to Settings > Windows Update and pause updates to prevent Windows 11 from downloading build 27723 again. Microsoft says it is working on resolving the problem, so a fix should be available in future updates (there is no ETA, sadly). Other bugs in build 27723 include update error 0xc190010, rollbacks when updating, game crashes on launch, biometric issues on Copilot+ PCs, and more. Speaking of old Nvidia graphics cards, bugs in Windows 11 build 27723 are not the only thing that could nag users to look for a newer GPU. OBS Studio 31 Beta 1 is out, and it no longer supports Nvidia Encoder (NVENC) on Kepler-based graphics cards (GTX 600 and GTX 700 Series). You can learn more about that here. Microsoft Edge unveils privacy-preserving ads API in limited developer preview
Karlston posted a news in Software News
Microsoft has announced a limited preview of a new privacy-preserving ads API for developers on the Canary and Dev channels of Microsoft Edge version 130.0.2808.0 and above. The API is called the Ad Selection API and is designed to display online ads but in a more privacy-friendly way than using third-party cookies which track you around the web. As part of the preview for developers, Microsoft is rolling out several web platform features within Edge. This includes a limited Origin Trial of the API and associated auction mechanisms, which Microsoft says are also privacy-preserving. This preview also includes additional Edge user settings to boost transparency and give users more control. The Redmond giant is rolling out the functionality to users gradually so you may not even see it in the Canary and Dev channels. If you want to switch it on manually, type the following in the URL bar edge://flags#edge-ad-selection-api then enable the API. Unfortunately, the preview is still in limited regions and notably excludes the European Economic Area (EEA) and the United Kingdom (UK). For any developers interested in reading more about the Ad Selection API in more detail, it has created a project page on GitHub. New issues can also be opened in the project's GitHub repository and there are biweekly calls to discuss aspects of the project. If you want to report issues without using GitHub, in Edge, go to Settings and more (...) > Help and feedback > Send feedback. So, while this news doesn't really concern end users just yet, it's a positive sign for any Microsoft Edge users who wish for online ads in the browser to be more private. It's not clear how long it'll take for this new setup to start impacting ordinary people, though, as Microsoft hasn't provided a timeline.
