6 essential steps that Windows 11 users often miss after a fresh install
UberGeek commented on Karlston's news in Software News
The key reason why I stopped using my fav. Windows 7 was that quite a few of my programs dropped support for that OS . . . while there's still a workaround when merely Microsoft drops support, there's no such hope when non-Microsoft programs drop support. ATM, using Windows 11 as well as Windows 10 on 14-year old computers . . . without any worry about cross-compatibility. BTW, this was years, years ago . . . given to understand that as of date, the list of third-party programs that have dropped support to Windows 7, has grown steadily & mercilessly. -

When Windows 11 was first released, many long-time users felt features they loved had been taken away overnight. Three and a half years later, the same complaints still rise to the top of the Feedback Hub with tens of thousands of votes. Below are the five most wanted Windows 11 features on the Microsoft Feedback Hub. The most wanted requests in Windows 11 "Bring back the ability to move the taskbar to the top and sides of the screen on Windows 11" Right now, the taskbar is glued to the bottom edge, and users want the freedom to move the taskbar to the top or sides of the screen. No option to change taskbar position Feedback Hub's post on the topic has racked up 24,046 votes and 2,086 comments, but the feedback is not fresh. Users posted this feedback immediately when Windows 11 shipped to testers, and Microsoft has maintained a radio silence about its plans to upgrade the taskbar. "The move taskbar feature is missing now for years. Why has this not been changed yet?" writes a user, who also begs Microsoft to "please replace whoever is responsible for the current design." One user wonders if Microsoft's stock phrase "We've got it" really means "We're ignoring it." Microsoft's Feedback Hub has an automated reply to the post that just says "We'll be continuing to evolve Windows 11 and its features based on feedback like this, so thank you so much for taking the time to give us your feedback." "I would like to be able to turn off the Recommended section in the Start menu and have the whole area disappear in Windows 11." The second most-voted request sits at 17,479 votes and 794 comments. Three years after Windows 11's launch, Microsoft still doesn't understand that users do not want a Start menu with the recommended menu. I personally hate it, too, because it just clogs up the Start menu with recent app or file activities, which are already exposed via the File Explorer. "No, I don't want to reduce the size, I want to hide it, forever, for good," a user wrote. Another poster calls the pane "a useless, empty space" that wastes screen real estate, and the rest of the users fear it will become an "Advertising space." In reply to the Feedback, Microsoft noted that full removal is not available but lists half a dozen toggles inside Settings > Personalization > Start at least reduce the content. Start menu personalization settings The company recently added a More pins layout in Windows 11 23H2 that lets you shrink the pane to one row, but you can't get rid of the Recommended feed for now. "Add an option for Windows search to use my preferred search provider" Windows search still funnels web queries into Bing and opens them in Edge unless you live in the European Economic Area, where new regulations force Microsoft to respect the default browser. The proposal for a global switch has 11,007 votes and 101 comments. One user says the EU rule "should apply in the United States, heck, everywhere in the world." Another user is bothered by "sparkles next to the search bar" and wants to disable them. European Insiders have already seen test builds that unlock the choice, but Microsoft has no plans to bring it outside the EU. "The CPU/Processor requirements for Windows 11 are too high and I think you should lower them" This feedback was first published in 2021, and it now holds 8,483 votes and 1,025 comments. Users are upset that their fully capable PCs cannot run Windows 11. Windows 11 TPM requirement One user says they own a gaming rig with "near best hardware" but an unsupported processor, calling the situation another "Vista/8.1" moment. Another user agrees and notes that "millions of PCs are going to end up in the landfill for no good reason," as we approach Windows 10's doomsday. "Update the Windows 11 taskbar to support never combining app icons and hiding labels" In Windows 10, you could set your taskbar so each window stayed separate and labels stayed hidden. Windows 11 now has an option to set "never-combine" mode, but it still feels unfinished. Open enough apps, and the bar collapses icons into a "…" block. Icons change width whenever, say, your Spotify song title updates, which makes everything jump around. Similarly, labels are forced on by default and can't be turned off, so you lose precious space at the bottom of the screen. In a Feedback Hub post, one tester even called it "horrible" and begged Microsoft to "please finally fix this," while another asked why labels are forced at all when choosing never-combine, as "it eats too much space." If you visit the Feedback Hub, you'll see dozens of similar posts. BleepingComputer observed that these five feedback posts account for over 75,000 votes alone, and each still pulls in fresh comments weekly. It's crystal clear that users want Microsoft to improve Windows 11, but is the Redmond giant listening? Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. Microsoft accidentally replaced Windows 11 startup sound with one from Vista
Karlston posted a news in Software News
The recently released Windows 11 Dev and Beta builds introduced some welcome changes and improvements. However, those preview builds are not flawless and have a pretty long list of known issues. One of those issues, though, is a rather delightful one: Windows 11's default startup jingle has been accidentally replaced with one from 2006. After Windows Insiders discovered that Windows 11 now plays the Windows Vista startup sound and reported it to Microsoft, the company acknowledged it and added it to the list of known bugs in the latest Windows 11 Dev and Beta builds: This week’s flight comes with a delightful blast from the past and will play the Windows Vista boot sound instead of the Windows 11 boot sound. We’re working on a fix. Although Windows Vista is nearly two decades old, it was brought to everyone's attention this week after Apple introduced macOS 26 Tahoe with its controversial "Liquid Glass" redesign, which many consider a rather miserable remix of Windows Aero from Windows Vista and Windows 7. While it is definitely an interesting coincidence, Microsoft did not intentionally replace the startup sound in Windows 11 preview builds. Brandon LeBlanc from the Windows Insider team confirmed in his X that that is a bug after joking about everyone talking about Windows Vista once again in light of Apple's latest announcements: It is worth noting that if you miss the startup sound of Windows Vista, you can still use it in modern Windows versions. All it takes is the original WAV file and a few clicks in the Windows Registry and Sound settings. And for those who want a shot of nostalgia, here is the sound of Windows Vista startup: What startup jingle do you like more: Windows Vista or Windows 11? Share your thoughts in the comments. Windows 10 KB5060534, KB5060532, KB5060530, KB5060529 recovery updates released
Karlston posted a news in Software News
Microsoft this week released Patch Tuesday updates for the month of June 2025 on Windows 10 (KB5060533 / KB5060531 / KB5061010 / KB5060998) and Windows 11 (KB5060842, KB5060999). Alongside that dynamic updates for Windows 10 were also published. This time there were no such updates for Windows 11 which is quite rare. Dynamic updates bring improvements to the Windows Recovery in the form of Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) updates, also called Safe OS updates, as well as to the Setup binaries in the form of Setup updates. These Dynamic Update packages are meant to be applied to existing Windows images prior to their deployment. These packages include fixes to Setup.exe binaries, SafeOS updates for Windows Recovery Environment, and more. Dynamic Updates also help preserve Language Pack (LP) and Features on Demand (FODs) content during the upgrade process. VBScript, for example, is currently an FOD on Windows 11 24H2. Only recovery updates were released. The changelogs are given below: KB5060534: Safe OS Dynamic Update for Windows 10: June 10, 2025 KB5060532: Safe OS Dynamic Update for Windows 10, version 21H2 and 22H2: June 10, 2025 KB5060530: Safe OS Dynamic Update for Windows 10, version 1809 and Windows Server 2019: June 10, 2025 KB5060529: Safe OS Dynamic Update for Windows 10, version 1607 and Windows Server 2016: June 10, 2025 Microsoft notes that the updates will be downloaded and installed automatically via the Windows Update channel. You can also avail them manually on Microsoft's Update Catalog website: KB5060534, KB5060532, KB5060530, and KB5060534. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. Microsoft has released a new update for the Edge browser in the Stable Channel. Version 137.0.3296.83 introduces a new password feature and fixes security vulnerabilities to make your browsing experience safer. Starting with new features, Microsoft Edge 137 now supports Secure Password Deployment. Microsoft recently announced this for IT admins, allowing them to share encrypted passwords with user groups. This service lets users log into websites without seeing their passwords, thus enhancing the organization's security. You can read more about Microsoft Edge Secure Password Deployment in our recent article here. Security updates in Microsoft Edge 137.0.3296.83 include two fixes for Chromium vulnerabilities: CVE-2025-5958: Use after free in Media in Google Chrome prior to 137.0.7151.103 allowed a remote attacker to potentially exploit heap corruption via a crafted HTML page. (Chromium security severity: High) CVE-2025-5959: Type Confusion in V8 in Google Chrome prior to 137.0.7151.103 allowed a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code inside a sandbox via a crafted HTML page. (Chromium security severity: High) You can update Microsoft Edge to the latest version by heading to edge://settings/help. The browser can also update itself automatically in the background and apply updates between restarts. In case you missed it, Microsoft released Edge 137 by the end of May. The update deprecated quite a lot of existing features, including Wallet, Image Editor, Image Hover, Mini menu, and Video Super Resolution. It also introduced Web Content Filtering and enhancements for the picture-in-picture player and Find on Page in Microsoft Edge for Business. The next feature update for Microsoft Edge, version 138, is expected on the week of June 26, 2025, as part of the standard four-week release cadence. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. KDE brings Wayland PiP to Plasma 6.5, adds finishing touches to 6.4 as release nears
Karlston posted a news in Software News
The KDE team has released its This Week in Plasma update, showing the final polish being applied to Plasma 6.4 ahead of its June 17 release. Last week, the KDE team brought performance upgrades, and this week the team is continuing that with improvements like faster loading for System Monitor components in Plasma 6.4. Future work for Plasma 6.5 is already underway, and it includes a feature that many have probably been waiting for: proper Picture-in-Picture support on Wayland. This uses an experimental version of the Wayland PiP protocol, which means applications like Firefox that also implement it can finally display PiP windows correctly. It is a long-overdue addition that moves the Wayland session closer to feature parity with X11. The devs also merged KWin's Background Contrast effect into the Blur effect. Virtual desktops can now be re-ordered from the Pager widget, a feature previously missing. Invert and Zoom settings have been moved into the Accessibility page, which is a more sensible place for them than the Desktop Effects page was. The team also brought consistency to the Breeze application style, with animated effects for checkboxes and radio buttons now working in QtQuick-based apps. Other small cleanups include standardizing the section headers in the Disks & Devices, Networks, and Bluetooth widgets. For those who do a lot of screen recording, Spectacle now makes it much clearer how to stop a recording, both in its notifications and shortcut names. As for the immediate future, Plasma 6.4 and its first point release are getting accessibility and user interface tweaks. The team improved text contrast for labels used in secondary roles throughout Plasma, making things like brightness indicators much easier to read. The Kicker Application Menu in 6.4 can now scroll horizontally when a search returns a ton of results, so you can actually see all of them. The team also delivered some stability improvements in Plasma 6.4.0, most notably fixing a long-standing issue where adding widgets to oversized panels could freeze the entire shell. Discover also got a much-needed fix for a crash that occurred when suggesting replacements for unsupported Flatpak apps. On the usability side, dragging files into a Folder View widget no longer causes glitchy visuals, and Open and Save dialogs from Flatpak-based browsers now properly allow the preview pane to open. Printing from Flatpak GTK apps now respects correct sizing, and installing or removing apps no longer wipes out your search input in Kicker or Kickoff while you're using it. Other notable fixes include: Selection rectangles on the desktop now render properly when using custom fonts or sizes (Plasma 6.3.6) A crash in System Monitor charts used by apps and Plasma components has been resolved (Frameworks 6.15) Switching process views in System Monitor no longer causes crashes (Frameworks 6.16) Open and Save dialogs no longer close when hovering over specific files (Frameworks 6.16) A thumbnailer crash on X11 caused by certain widget styles has been fixed (KDE Gear 25.04.3) Frameworks 6.15 also speeds up System Monitor by delaying tree view arrow loading There are still 3 high-priority Plasma bugs holding out, and the list of quick-win "15-minute bugs" has grown to 23. LibreOffice closes in on Microsoft Office, leaves Windows 7/8 behind in 25.8 Beta 1
Karlston posted a news in Software News
The Document Foundation has released LibreOffice 25.8 Beta 1 for public testing on Linux, macOS, and Windows. This is the second pre-release for the 25.8 cycle and the foundation says that the final, stable version of LibreOffice 25.8 is expected to land at the end of August 2025. Starting off with Writer, LibreOffice's Word, the developers have finally addressed some long-standing annoyances, including a new command to easily insert a paragraph break right before a table. This beta also introduces a useful privacy feature in its Auto-Redact tool, letting you strip all images from a document with a single option. To use it, go to Tools and select the Auto-Redact option: The application has improved its ability to handle different languages for punctuation, preventing mix-ups in multilingual documents. Other notable improvements have also been made. A new hyphenation rule lets you choose to prevent a word from splitting at the end of a page, moving the whole line to the next page instead. Microsoft Word has had this feature for years now. The Navigator now displays a handy tooltip with word and character counts for headings and their sub-outlines. Scrolling behavior when selecting text has been improved, making it less erratic. A new command with a keyboard shortcut was added for converting fields into plain text. Calc gets a lot of new functions that bring it closer to its competitors like Excel, including TEXTSPLIT, VSTACK, and WRAPROWS. Impress now properly supports embedded fonts in PPTX files, which should reduce headaches when sharing presentations with PowerPoint users. Alongside these additions, the project is also cleaning house; support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 has been completely dropped. There are also smaller UI tweaks across the suite, like allowing a single click to enter rotation mode for objects in Writer and Calc. macOS users get better integration, with proper support for native full screen mode and new window management features from the Sequoia update. In terms of performance, the team has optimized everything from loading huge DOC files and XLSX spreadsheets with tons of conditional formatting to simply switching between sheets in Calc. These improvements should be noticeable, especially when working with complex documents. A new application-wide "Viewer mode" has also been implemented, which opens all files in a read-only state for quick, safe viewing. On a related note, The Document Foundation has joined efforts by the likes of KDE to encourage Windows 10 users to switch to Linux. Also, you might have heard that Denmark, in a bid to lessen its reliance on Microsoft, has decided to make a full switch to LibreOffice, with plans to begin phasing out Office 365 in certain ministries as early as next month. If you're interested in this release, you can read the full release notes and download the binaries for your platform: Windows, macOS (Intel | Apple Silicon), or Linux (DEB | RPM). Apple announced Liquid Glass at WWDC 2025 in all of its glory. It's a new glass-inspired design language from the iPhone-maker making its way to most of its software platforms, including iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, tvOS 26, and watchOS 26. Apple markets Liquid Glass as a new translucent material that "behaves like glass in the real world. Its color is informed by surrounding content and intelligently adapts between light and dark environments." The Cupertino giant isn't wrong. The new glass-inspired design does bring a fresh coat of paint and some beautiful visuals to the iPhone and other Apple-made devices. However, as the dust from the mega arrival settles, people are starting to realize the current drawbacks of having too much glass on their device. There have been reports of users, including those at Neowin, experiencing readability issues, background separation issues, and trouble focusing on the content displayed on the screen due to its transparent nature. While these are small nuances on Apple's part that can be fixed without much hassle, it's degrading the initial experience of what the company calls its biggest visual upgrade since iOS 7. That said, there are some workarounds built into iOS 26 that will help you tone down the shortcomings. If you're running the iOS 25 Developer Beta 1 on your supported iPhone model, you can follow these steps to make things a little better: Go to the Settings app on your iPhone. Scroll down and tap on Accessibility > Display & Text Size. Next, you'll find two toggle options: Reduce Transparency and Increase Contrast. When you enable the Reduce Transparency toggle button, iOS 26 can "improve contrast by reducing transparency and blurs on some backgrounds to increase legibility." The other toggle, Increase Contrast, does what its name suggests. It can "increase color contrast between app foreground and background colors." Enabling each of these toggle buttons individually or simultaneously will have different effects on your iPhone's user interface. Control Center is being criticized for the extra transparency, making the UI look cluttered and difficult to focus. Here, the Reduce Transparency button adds a darker background to make the Control Center UI elements stand out. Liquid Glass transparency issues are also prevalent in the Notification Center and the navigation controls of various apps. In the image above, see how the text of the navigation buttons has become unreadable or hard to focus on with certain backgrounds. It's challenging to determine what can trigger such behavior, as one can have countless color combinations on their device. In the image below, this is how these buttons look when both Reduce Transparency and Increase Contrast are enabled. It's still a hit or miss depending on what colors you are dealing with. Part of the blame also goes to the fact that iOS 26 is still an early beta, and the change doesn't render as intended every time. You can also notice the difference in the look and feel of the Control Center when reduced transparency is turned on. On a side note, you can add the Reduce Transparency and Increase Contrast buttons in the Control Center for quicker access. That said, let's wait to see what changes Apple will implement as it continues to gather feedback through the beta program. Hopefully, the software will become more stable when the first public beta of iOS 26 arrives sometime in July. Interested users can try out the latest iPhone update through the developer beta program, noting that early builds might come with unexpected bugs and issues. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. Record Labels Rebuff U.S. Government in Landmark ISP Piracy Liability Showdown
Karlston posted a news in File Sharing News
A group of major record labels has fired back at an amicus brief from the U.S. Solicitor General, which urges the Supreme Court to accept Cox Communications' petition in a landmark piracy liability lawsuit. The labels characterize the Solicitor General's recommendation to back Cox's petition while denying their own as 'bewildering'. After a Virginia jury ordered internet provider Cox to pay $1 billion in damages for failing to take appropriate actions against pirating subscribers, shockwaves rippled through the ISP industry. The verdict, in favor of major record labels including Sony and Universal, was a catalyst for many other ‘repeat infringer’ lawsuits. This resulted in yet more multi-million dollar claims and awards, with more still in the pipeline today. Meanwhile, Cox did all it could to fight the verdict. This resulted in some small wins, including a recent ruling that the billion-dollar damages calculation needs a re-evaluation. However, the liability ruling stands. In a final attempt to find the law on its side, Cox petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court last year. In essence, it argued that an ISP shouldn’t be held liable simply because it knew that subscribers were pirating, while challenging the assertion that merely knowing about subscriber piracy constitutes ‘willful’ copyright infringement. U.S. Government Backs Cox The Supreme Court signaled interest but before a decision to take the case on, the Court asked for the Government’s position on the matter. The request was honored two weeks ago. The Solicitor General’s amicus curiae brief sides with Cox and urges the Supreme Court to grant the ISP’s position. This isn’t just in the interest of Cox, but also other ISPs and the public at large. According to the U.S. Government’s view, an ISP is not automatically liable for copyright infringement if it fails to terminate subscribers after receiving copyright infringement notices. The brief states that the verdict of the Court of Appeals could have broad negative implications for ISPs and their subscribers. The U.S. further argues that Cox’s actions were not willful, as “willfulness” generally requires knowledge or reckless disregard that the defendant’s own conduct was unlawful. Simply knowing about third-party infringements should not be sufficient. Aside from fully backing Cox, the Solicitor General also urged the Supreme court to deny the record labels’ petition. The labels argued that Cox should be held liable for vicarious copyright infringement because it profited from piracy that it could have prevented. Record Labels are “Bewildered”, Fire Back at U.S. The U.S. position gave Cox and other ISPs reason to feel more positive about an eventual turnaround. Grande Communications, for example, wasted no time citing the Government’s position in its final remarks for its own, separate, Supreme Court petition. In a supplemental filing at the Supreme Court, the record labels characterize the Solicitor General’s recommendation as ‘bewildering’, given the evidence on record. In a direct, point-by-point rebuttal to the U.S. brief, the labels attempt to set the record straight. Rebuttal The brief argues that Cox’s contributory liability for copyright infringement is ‘straightforward’ and does not warrant Supreme Court review because Cox would face liability ‘In Any Jurisdiction’. “Cox was held liable not because it failed to do enough to police infringement, but because it took no meaningful steps to stop infringement and continued serving specific, identifiable subscribers even after receiving explicit notice of their repeat (and often rampant) infringement,” they write. The record labels focus more on the broader context that, in their view, shows that Cox ‘willfully’ decided to let repeat infringements slide because subscribers earn them revenue. The ISP did not meaningfully implement a policy ‘for the termination in appropriate circumstances of repeat infringers’ and lost its safe harbor as a result. “F the dmca!!!” “This rebuttal is amplified by evidence of Cox’s alleged culpability and disdain for the law, including an expletive quote from an internal communication,” the rebuttal reads. “Cox kept supplying the means of infringement because it said ‘F the dmca!!!’ and adopted an express policy of prioritizing profits from subscription fees over compliance with the Copyright Act or the DMCA.” “F the dmca!!!” The labels note that lower courts have been clear on liability cases like this, and argue that the recent Supreme Court Twitter v. Taamneh ruling , which the U.S. cited, is not relevant in this context. There is overwhelming evidence for Cox’s willfulness, they say, adding that Cox didn’t contest this finding during its appeal. Therefore, the petition should be denied, contrary to the U.S. Solicitor General’s recommendation. Grant Our Petition (or both…) The record labels also disagree with the U.S. when it comes to their own Supreme Court petition, which argues that Cox should also be held liable for vicarious copyright infringement. The brief reiterates that there is a real split in the lower courts on this matter. Cox can be held vicariously liable if it has the right and ability to control the infringing activities and a direct financial interest in those activities. According to the Solicitor General, the lower court correctly concluded that this is not the case here. The labels, however, argue that Cox did profit directly from pirating subscribers, by declining to terminate repeat infringers, which kept the subscription fees coming in. The labels’ brief ends by asking the Court to deny Cox’s petition while granting theirs, the direct opposite of the U.S. recommendation. However, the labels offer a fallback. If the Court is inclined to accept the Cox case, it should also accept theirs. “The Court should grant Sony’s petition and deny Cox’s. If the Court disagrees, it should grant both,” the record labels conclude. — A copy of the supplemental brief, submitted to the Supreme Court this week by Sony et al. is available here (pdf) Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. Fresh leak suggests OnePlus Pad Lite in the works, key specs revealed
Karlston posted a news in Mobile News
OnePlus recently unveiled the mid-range OnePlus 13s and the OnePlus Pad 3 Android tablet in India (the tablet is also coming to the U.S.). Now, it appears that the company is working on another tablet, this time, a budget model called the OnePlus Pad Lite. Supposedly, it will be the successor to the OnePlus Pad Go, which launched in the U.K., India, and European countries. According to the leaked images, OnePlus Pad Lite follows the same design elements as earlier OnePlus tablets. The tablet is shown to have a circular camera at the center of the rear panel, with the logo sitting in the middle. The USB-C port and speaker grills are located on the right side frame of the tablet. The alleged OnePlus Pad Lite measures 254.9 x 166.5 x 7.4mm and weighs 539 grams, which is slightly taller, wider, and thinner, but weighs less compared to the OnePlus Pad Go. The tablet, courtesy of 91Mobiles and OnLeaks, is displayed in blue, which could be the only color option. One image shows the tablet with a cover that doubles as a kickstand, but may be sold separately. Gallery: OnePlus Pad Lite Based on the leaked specs, the OnePlus Pad Lite could feature an 11-inch LCD 1920x1080 resolution 90Hz display. It could be powered by the MediaTek Helio G100 processor and paired with the Mali G57 GPU. The tablet may come with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage, with more storage and RAM options available at launch. Reportedly, the OnePlus Pad Lite could feature a 5MP primary camera and a 5MP selfie camera. Under the hood, it could be juiced by a 9,340 mAh battery. On the software side, OnePlus Pad Lite may come with OxygenOS 15.0.1 based on Android 15 out of the box. There is no clarity on which market OnePlus plans to launch the OnePlus Pad Lite in. However, the report suggests that it could be priced under ₹20,000 (roughly $231). Images by 91mobiles x OnLeaks Source Hope you enjoyed this news post.
